Giuliani to meet with Cruz: report

By Rebecca Savransky

Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani is set to meet Thursday with Republican presidential candidate Ted Cruz, Politico reported.

The meeting in New York comes as Cruz shifts his campaign to the Empire State ahead of its April 19 primary.

Giuliani has spoken highly of Cruz's rival Donald Trump during the campaign.

In February, he said he was acting as an informal adviser to Trump. He also spoke positively of the front-runner at an event in Illinois.

"I hope you’ll look for a candidate who can set a direction for this country that one, talks about how great they are, a lot,” he told the audience there.

When Cruz attacked Trump for his "New York values" earlier this year, Giuliani slammed the Texas senator, saying he should apologize after all the city has been through.

"After all we have been through as a city and as one undivided nation, to have a United States senator running for President paint New York as a city consumed with greed, sin and media obsession is shocking," Giuliani wrote in the New York Daily News.

"Sen. Ted Cruz should apologize to the people of New York for his remarks and to the people of the United States for his crass attempt to divide us.”

Trump defended New York in response to Cruz's attacks and Giuliani said New York should be proud of Trump, who delivered a "strong, truthful and eloquent defense of our great city and nation."

While campaigning in the Bronx on Wednesday, Cruz explained that when he uses the term New York values, he's referring to the "liberal Democratic politicians" whose policies "have been hammering the people of New York for some time."

Trump has a large lead over Cruz in New York, according to the RealClearPolitics average of polls. Trump has 53 percent support, followed by John Kasich with 22 percent and then Cruz with 19 percent.
