Abdalla said it appears the suspect walked up to the judge as he approached the courthouse and shot him several times in the stomach at point-blank range.
The judge was carrying a weapon and returned fire, as did a probation officer on the scene, Abdalla said.
"If there wasn't a probation officer, this gentleman would have kept shooting until he killed the judge," the sheriff said.
Abdalla said shooter was hit three times.
Once the bullet slugs are removed from the suspect's body, it will be determined if the judge or the officer hit the suspect, Abdalla said.

Authorities identified the gunman as Nathaniel "Nate" Richmond, the father of Ma'Lik Richmond. Ma'Lik, then 17, served about 10 months in a juvenile lockup after being convicted with another Steubenville High School football player of raping a 16-year-old girl during an alcohol-fueled party in 2012.

Justice - for the 16YO girl - denied for 3 or 4 years, a 10 month sentence for rape or abetting rape, and a sperm donor who took vengeance for justice being done, somehow I suspect Ma'Lik, now an adult, will have further acquaintance with courtrooms and the inside of jail and maybe prison cells. I dearly want to be wrong, but "If these shadows remain unaltered by the Future ...".

It is entirely possible that the Battle of Briton would have come out very differently but for a few Polish pilots flying for the RAF.

Regarding the Steinle case, she should still be alive, because the guy who fired the guy is an illegal, and should not have been in the US. Period. However:

In short, the prosecutor absurdly overcharged, and could not even prove what may have been what happened.

I agree with your assessment, the prosecution overreached, and couldn't prove intent, especially with a ricochet. They either knew better, or should have. So, the guy walks.

Facts are that he shouldn't have been in this country AND he sure as hell shouldn't have put a gun in his hand.

I don't give a damn about his intent. Charge him with manslaughter, not murder.

What he did with 5 deportations, etc., ? He should have been executed. Enough of this insanity.

From what I know as an outsider two counties away, I might have voted to convict on In voluntary Manslaughter. Because it sounds like the prosecutor did present expert testimony to the effect that accidental firing of that model was not possible. How strong it was, I don't know, but the absurd over-charging might have inclined the jury against that expert testimony.
