@Slide Rule The KKK of today is NOT to be confused with the KKK from the end of the War of Northern Aggression to around 1950.
You are NOT taught this in your history books, but the KKK was the ONLY government for white people during that period.
The woman who raised me was 9 years old and her sister was 6 years old when their mother and father died in the flue epidemic of 1918. There was NO government agency to feed, shelter,or protect them because the Yankee carpetbagger government and police were ONLY interested in protecting themselves and their relatives while they stole land from locals by announcing land sales for failure to pay back taxes the same morning the sales were held, and "Lording it over the locals" in every other way possible.
So it was the local KKK chapter that took her and her little sister to the 1-legged Civil War vet that owned the property where I am sitting at right now,and told him "Old man,you are unable to live alone and take care of yourself properly,so we are going to leave these little girls with you to cook, clean, and keep you company. In return, you are going to buy food and clothing appropriate for little girls, and send them to school."
My mother told me this only lasted for a couple of weeks, and then the KKK showed up again on horseback, called the old man out into the yard, and told him "Old man,we have heard you are not sending these little girls to school,or buying food appropriate for them, and that you are spending all your money on whiskey instead. This stops right NOW,or we will come back and I will tie you to that Weeping Willow Tree and beat you with my horse whip until my arm gets tired."
And THAT,my friends was truly from "the court of no appeal". If they promised it,it WAS going to happen.
My mother told me they never had a minute of trouble or neglect from that old man from that night until the night he died.
By then she was old enough to marry,so she married a WW-1 vet that had been eaten up with mustard gas in order for her and her little sister to have a place to live. I remember us visiting with him occasionally when I was a child.
She ended up marrying the non-drinking healthy man that was roughly her own age after divorcing the WW-1 vet for abuse, and getting custody of his daughter from a previous marriage. She remained married to him until she died when she was in her 70's.
BTW,this is the third time this land has been in our family. This will end when I die because I have no children, and it gets sold and the money all goes to 2 charities.
BTW,the KKK was also known to "convince" some of the worse carpet-baggers to be a little less greedy and a lot less aggressive. THAT was the reason why they wore the hoods. They WERE the ONLY law that protected white people during that period, and if they were ever positively identified as KKK members, they would be put in prison.
