Donald Trump clear favorite in Louisiana primary: UNO poll

Donald Trump, the New York real estate mogul who has cannon-balled the 2016 Republican presidential race, incensed party elders and set off hand-ringing across the country, is enjoying a sizable lead on the eve of Louisiana's GOP primary.

The University of New Orleans found Wednesday (March 2) that 38 percent of likely Republican voters wanted to see him win the party nomination in Cleveland.

His nearest rival, Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, scored 26 percent of the vote and Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., just 11 percent. Ohio Gov. John Kasich won 5 percent. The survey removed neurosurgeon Ben Carson from its list after he all but suspended his campaign in the aftermath of Super Tuesday.

The telephone survey, conducted by UNO political scientist Ed Chervenak and graduate research assistant Tony Licciardi, received 1,874 responses and had a 2.26 percent margin of error. It did not focus on the Democratic primary between Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders.

The data are significant, considering little polling has been done in the Pelican State leading up to Saturday's voting. The survey did find, however, that about one in five Republicans still remains undecided.

Trump did well across across the state, although his best showing was among voters in suburban New Orleans and the north shore. While he still led all candidates among voters around Lafayette, the 3rd Congressional District also had the highest percentage of undecided voters.

Rubio, who canceled a rally in Baton Rouge Friday in order to focus on his home state of Florida, did poorly among voters under 35 despite being the youngest candidate in the race at 44.

Trump wins D.C. GOP straw poll

Presidential candidate Donald Trump came in first place Wednesday night, March 2, in a straw poll conducted at the D.C. Republican Party’s annual Lincoln Douglas Dinner.

A statement released by the D.C. Republican Committee says Trump received 31 percent of the vote, with GOP presidential candidate Marco Rubio coming in second with 28 percent. GOP presidential contender Ted Cruz received 16 percent, John Kasich received 14 percent and Ben Carson received 5 percent.

D.C. GOP Chair Jose Cunningham said in the statement that “hundreds” of D.C. Republicans who attended the annual dinner at the Lowes Madison Hotel voted in the straw poll.

Cunningham noted that “thousands of D.C. registered Republicans” will have a chance to vote for the Republican presidential candidate of their choice and how many delegates from D.C. they receive at a March 12 convention also to be held at the Lowes Madison.

Republicans participating in the convention will also vote to select who the city’s 16 delegates and 16 alternate delegates will be who will attend the Republican National Convention in July.

At least seven gay candidates who are members of the local D.C. Log Cabin Republicans group are among 160 candidates competing for the delegate and alternate positions.

“You see a similar race developing in the District that we’ve witnessed in virtually all the states so far,” Cunningham said in referring to the D.C. GOP’s March 12 presidential preference vote.

Trump can't get out of the 30s.  More evidence he would struggle at a brokered convention.

What about the candidates who can't get INTO the 30s?

Together, they beat him.   20% of voters in La. are undecided, and Rubio's been taking almost all of those.  Trump has a problem.

There is no problem.  Both Cruz and Rubio said this week they would get behind whoever wins the nomination.

Idiotic comment. So without any opponents Romney would have won 2012 with 100% of the vote! Yay!!

No-names Keith Russell Judd and John Wolfe managed 40% in their 2012 campaigns.

If it comes to between Trump and, quite literally, any one single other candidate, Trump still loses. He's hit his ceiling and his only hope is to either split the electorate or sow enough despair in his opponents' bases that they simply stay home, marginalized and disenfranchised for another election cycle.

Idiotic comment.

Just mimicking the "idiotic" comments claiming the same for Crubio.

What do you mean by "still"?   :pondering:
