Texas Gov. Greg Abbott endorses Ted Cruz for president
« on: February 24, 2016, 08:11:00 pm »
Texas Gov. Greg Abbott endorsed Sen. Ted Cruz's presidential campaign Wednesday, giving Cruz a high-profile backer in his home state before Tuesday's primary.

Abbott and Cruz have a long professional and personal history — Cruz worked as Texas's solicitor general while Abbott was the state's attorney general.

"Conservative values are at his core. He’s principled, he’s fearless, and he has true conviction," Abbott said of Cruz, who is holding a rally in Houston on Wednesday with a "special guest" thought to be Abbott.

Cruz is now backed by some of Texas's most high-profile politicians: Abbott, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick and former governor Rick Perry, who campaigned for Cruz in Iowa and South Carolina. Abbott's endorsement comes as Cruz's campaign has been plunged into turmoil with third-place finishes in South Carolina's primary and Nevada's caucuses and the firing of its communications director, who shared a video that falsely purported to show Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) disparaging the Bible.

The Texas Republican's campaign is banking on doing well in Texas, but polling released Wednesday shows Donald Trump cutting into Cruz's lead in the state.

Abbott, in a video released Wednesday, said Texans need to step up and vote for Cruz.

"To my fellow Texas conservatives, I say this: We need to deliver," Abbott said. "This is our time. Ted Cruz is our candidate. Now let’s do our part to take this country back."
