Saying the borderless area of the European Union poses a “serious risk” due to the influx of millions of Middle Eastern refugees, the continent is poised to cut off pass-port free travel for the next two years.
By invoking an emergency rule within the “Schengen Area,” or the 26 nations that have abolished passport border control, it will effectively stop migrants from crossing the unsecured border at Greece and then moving up the continent to more “favorable” nations like Sweden and Germany, the Associated Press is reporting.
They were given access to European Union documents showing a planned declaration that Greece is “failing to sufficiently protect its border.” At least 2,000 people per day still arrive daily in Greek islands on the Mediterranean in smugglers’ boats from Turkey.
More than 1 million migrants have entered the EU since the beginning of 2015 and most have come through Turkey and into Greece as they make their way up to European nations like Germany and Sweden.
Several nations have imposed temporary border controls to deal with the crisis and many have criticized Athens.
