Egypt committee seized $695 million of Muslim Brotherhood funds in two years

    Monday, 25 January 2016 11:59

Egypt has confiscated nearly $695 million from the Muslim Brotherhood group since January 2014, a committee tasked with managing the Muslim Brotherhood’s funds said on Sunday.

Committee Chairman Ezzat Khamis said at a press conference that funds from 1370 people had been confiscated.

Khamis said the committee has referred to documents from the public prosecutor, which he claims prove that the group sought to control the state during the rule of Mohamed Morsi. The documents he is referring to supposedly include a plan by the group to control the security and intelligence agencies and the judiciary, as well as army leaders.

A spokesman for the Foreign Relations Committee of the Freedom and Justice Party Abdul al- Mawjud Dardiri said in remarks to Anadolu news agency that the committee is not competent and the party does not recognise it.

He also expressed doubt regarding the documents’ authenticity, noting that they emerge two years after the burning of the headquarters of General Guide (the leader of the Brotherhood). Dardiri pointed out the timing, claiming that the committee is seeking to discredit the group hours before the 5th anniversary of the January 25 Revolution.

In January 2014, the government formed a committee to manage the funds, companies and charities owned by Muslim Brotherhood members. This came after the government had issued a decision labelling the Brotherhood a “terrorist” organisation.
