Italian diver Enzo Maiorca dies at 86

Maiorca was a famous free diver who set records for diving hundreds of feet. You probably know him better as the guy in the Apple iPhone commercial:

Good movie. 67 is young by today's standards. I didn't realize she was in so many movies.

RIP to television's Green Hornet---whom I liked not just because of his style, but because he was the only crimefighter I knew in my boyhood (I didn't discover the classic earlier radio show for decades to come) who didn't run around in his underwear to fight crime . . .

More on this:

Van Williams, TV’s Green Hornet, Dies at 82

Quote
Van Williams, who played crime fighters on television during the 1960s, most notably the Green Hornet on a short-lived ABC show that later attained a cult following and that introduced American audiences to the martial arts master Bruce Lee, died last week in a care facility near his home in Scottsdale, Ariz. He was 82.

The cause was renal failure, said his wife, Vicki Williams. She said that Mr. Williams probably died on the night of Nov. 28, but that he was not officially declared dead until the next day.

A tall, athletic Texan, Mr. Williams looked the part of a superhero and grew up an actual cowboy — although, curiously, he was not cast in many westerns. He played the same character, a detective named Kenny Madison, on two ABC series: “Bourbon Street Beat,” with Richard Long and Andrew Duggan, in the 1959-60 season, and then “Surfside 6,” with Lee Patterson and Troy Donahue, until 1962.

Rashaan Salaam, Heisman trophy winner and NFL/XFL running back, dies at 42

Salaam was a running phenom for the Colorado Buffaloes in college football and played three years for the team before forgoing his last year of college to enter the NFL. He was drafted by the Chicago Bears, and as a rookie, he reached 1,000 yards in his first season, the youngest player to do so in league history at age 21. Like many running backs, Salaam's career peaked very early and he battled injuries for the next two years, eventually finding himself out of football in 1998, playing a bit role on the expansion Cleveland New Browns in '99 and playing for the Memphis Maniax of the XFL in 2001.

Salaam was found dead in a park in Boulder, Colorado, with no evidence of foul play.

From CNN:

Former astronaut and US Sen. John Glenn, 95, was hospitalized "more than a week ago," according to Ohio State University spokesman Hank Wilson.

"Sen. Glenn is at The James Cancer Hospital at The Ohio State University (and) was admitted there more than a week ago," Wilson wrote in an email. "I do not know his condition or illness or prognosis. I caution that even though Sen. Glenn is at The James that does not necessarily mean he has cancer."

Glenn had heart valve replacement surgery in 2014.

excerpted, more at the link: http://www.cnn.com/2016/12/07/health/john-glenn-hospitalized/

Very sparse, and strange that he was admitted a week ago but the news is breaking just now.

Is it wrong for me to hope he hangs on long enough to not be eulogized by Obama?

Checking Wikipedia, you are correct; all of the others have passed. Most recently, Scott Carpenter in 2013.

Rock musician Greg Lake dies at 69

Lake was originally a guitarist before being recruited to the group King Crimson, where he became a bassist and helped the band become briefly but phenomenally successful in 1969. He then met Keith Emerson, who died earlier this year, and formed the supergroup Emerson, Lake & Palmer (and its later incarnation Emerson, Lake & Powell). In his later career, he performed with Trans-Siberian Orchestra.

As a solo artist, Lake's most prominent work was the 1975 Christmas song "I Believe in Father Christmas."

Lake died from what his manager described as "a long and stubborn battle with cancer."

Keith Emerson killed himself in March.  His gift was gone and he couldn't take it anymore when fans started telling him "thanks but stop hurting yourself".  Very sad, actually.

Oh I forgot how he died. Now I am really going to cry. Wasn’t a fan of  ELP, (they were slightly a bit before my time) but how dang sad.

Seems like we lost a lot of musicians this year.

I am a big fan of ELP, and I knew about Emerson's battle with Carpal Tunnel.  When I found out he'd been recording lately I got hold of some of the new recordings.  Not the old Keith Emerson.  Playing had become an exercise in massive pain.

I’m afraid my taste in music until the end of the 70s was pretty much pop stuff. You know, David Cassidy, Bobby Sherman, Barry Manilow, the stuff my mom would buy. I got a lot of Sinatra and classical, and Beatles for some reason (pre Sgt. Pepper of course).

I’m afraid I didn’t get into the real cool bands until 11th grade or so. ELP had broken up by then. And being a Jersey girl, you know everyone loved Bruce. (So did I until he went too political. I still love his early stuff though)

My three favourite recordings by Greg Lake:

King Crimson, "In the Wake of Poseidon"

Emerson, Lake & Palmer, "Take a Pebble"
(I only wish ELP had stayed in and developed the direction of that number . . . )

Greg Lake, "C'est la Vie"
