Sanders campaign fires data director after breach of Clinton files
Bloomberg Politics

Quote
Bernie Sanders's presidential campaign has fired its national data director after he improperly accessed proprietary data from Hillary Clinton's campaign.

The staffer, Josh Uretsky, viewed data that the Clinton campaign had added to its own files during a temporary glitch in the voter database managed by outside vendor NGP VAN, two people familiar with the matter told Bloomberg.

The Sanders campaign confirmed late Thursday that it had fired a staffer who had accessed modeling data from the Clinton campaign. "That behavior is unacceptable and that staffer was immediately fired," communications director Michael Briggs said in a statement.

Briggs responded to a question about Uretsky by sharing that statement with Bloomberg a second time.

The fallout from the breach, first reported by The Washington Post, is a blow to the Sanders campaign, which is barred from using the crucial data just as the Iowa caucus approaches on February 1. Access won't be restored until an investigation is completed, the DNC said.

Though the Sanders team has fired a top data staffer, Briggs pointed blame at problems with the vendor's system. "Sadly, the vendor who runs the DNC's voter file program continues to make serious errors," he said, noting the campaign had alerted the DNC to problems months ago.

CEO Stu Trevelyan of NGP VAN described the event as an "isolated incident," saying "we have introduced additional safeguards to ensure that this issue will not recur."

Sanders threatens to sue DNC

By Ben Kamisar

Sen. Bernie Sanders's (I-Vt.) campaign manager said it would take the Democratic National Committee (DNC) to federal court Friday afternoon if it does not lift the suspension to the campaign's voter database.
"If the Democratic National Committee holds our data hostage ... we will be in federal court this afternoon seeking relief," said Jeff Weaver, the campaign manager. He added that the party had an "inappropriate reaction" to reports that a Sanders campaign staffer accessed Hillary Clinton voter data.

The DNC suspended its access to the party's voter database, which includes the Sanders campaign's own data, after revelations that a campaign staffer obtained private data from rival Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign.

Weaver told reporters that the campaign alerted the DNC about this problem two months ago, when it believed that some of its data had been "lost to one of the other campaigns."

In an interview with CNN's "Wolf" immediately after the Sanders campaign's press conference, DNC Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz denied that Sanders's voter information had been compromised two months ago, as Weaver claimed.

She brushed off the threat of legal action. "The Sanders campaign doesn’t have anything other than bluster to put out there," she said on CNN.

"We are following the agreement that both parties entered into. ... I'm confident that this is the decision that they would expect from us and it’s the same decision that we would make if the shoe was on the other foot."

She said the party's investigation found that the Sanders campaign "not only viewed it, but they exported it and downloaded it."

News of the suspension comes the day after Sanders landed endorsements from the Communications Workers of America union and from the progressive Democracy for America (DFA). It also comes just a day before the third Democratic debate, which Sanders's spokesman Michael Briggs slammed on Friday for being scheduled for a time when interest is likely to be low.

By suspending the Sanders campaign from access to its own database, the DNC was "actively attempting to undermine our campaign," Weaver said, accusing the party of tilting the scales for the Clinton campaign.

"Clearly in this case it looks like they are trying to help the Clinton campaign," he said.

“I don’t know the motivation of every single person at the DNC, but you look at the pattern of conduct,” Weaver continued. “We’ve obviously had concerns about the Saturday night debate schedule and its impact on the ability of campaigns to get their message out.

"We are taking on the establishment and I'm sure that there are people in the Democratic establishment not happy with the success that Sen. Sanders has had."

All three Democratic candidates have access to the DNC’s voter file. It acts as a two-way street, allowing candidates to rely on the party’s data to help target voters while also sharing campaign-specific data with the party. While the party is able to see the master file, candidates are not supposed to be able to access data obtained by their rivals.

Wasserman Schultz informed DNC members in an email obtained by The Hill earlier Friday that the Sanders campaign had access to “voter targeting data” from Clinton’s campaign for about 45 minutes, emphasizing that no financial, donor or volunteer data was exposed.

The letter, which was sent out to all reporters just as the Sanders press conference got under way, adds that the error did not lead to any public exposure of the data, only between the campaigns, and that the DNC’s vendor is investigating what went wrong and if anyone else had improperly accessed the data.

It also lays out the stipulations for Sanders to regain access to the voter file — “until the DNC is provided with a full accounting of whether or not this information was used and the way in which it was disposed.”

Democracy for America, the major progressive group that endorsed Sanders on Thursday, panned the DNC’s decision in a statement.

"The Democratic National Committee's decision to attack the campaign that figured out the problem, rather than go after the vendor that made the mistake, is profoundly damaging to the party's Democratic process,” said Charles Chamberlain, executive director of Democracy for America.

“DNC leaders should immediately reverse this disturbing decision before the committee does even more to bring its neutrality in the race for President into question."

Josh Uretsky, the fired Sanders staffer, told ABC News in an interview that his actions were not nefarious and that he had tried to investigate the failure while being sure to leave a record of his actions to prove his honest motives.

“The breach was in no way our fault. I saw it and attempted to investigate and attempted to do it in a transparent manner,” he told the network, adding that he does not believe the campaign took any data or tried to “gain anything out of it."

“We saw a security breach and we tried to assess it and understand it. … I knew full well that I was creating a record that the administrators could see.”

Sanders files suit to regain access to DNC voter database
Associated Press via MSN
Bernie Sanders' presidential campaign filed a lawsuit against the Democratic Party on Friday after it was temporarily barred from accessing a trove of information about potential voters as punishment for improperly accessing data compiled by the campaign of rival Hillary Clinton.

The reaction of the Democratic National Committee to the data breach, the depth of which was debated by all involved, thrust into the open longstanding suspicions among Sanders and his supporters that the national party is unfairly working to support the candidacy of its front-runner.

"Clearly, in this case, they are trying to help the Clinton campaign," said Sanders campaign manager Jeff Weaver.

DNC Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz responded that "the Sanders campaign had inappropriately and systematically accessed Clinton campaign data," rejecting Weaver's effort to portray the breach as the fault of a software glitch and a small group of rogue staffers.

The lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court in Washington, sought the "immediate restoration" the campaign's access to the voter database. It argued that without the database, the campaign would lose approximately $600,000 in donations a day.

"The loss of DNC support could significantly disadvantage, if not cripple, a Democratic candidate's campaign for public office," the lawsuit said.

I find that Clinton's data was breached and a Democrat was punished for it very ironic.

One of the radio guys today -Rush or the guy filling in for Hannity - said this wasn't so much a matter of Sanders' bad behavior as the DNC's lousy computer program  (probably the work of the same clowns who created the obamacare website).

Sanders sues Democratic Party

By Ben Kamisar

Sen. Bernie Sanders’ (I-Vt.) campaign sued the Democratic National Committee in federal court Friday evening following the suspension of his campaign from the DNC’s voter database after a security breach.

The suit claims that the campaign is losing $600,000 in donations each day that it does not have access to the data, and adds that the “damage to the campaign’s political viability as a result of being unable to communicate with constituents and voters, is far more severe, and incapable of measurement.”

The DNC barred Sanders from accessing the party’s voter file, which includes much of his campaign’s voter data, after a campaign staffer improperly accessed private data belonging to front-runner Hillary Clinton’s campaign. The vendor hired by the party to maintain the data accidentally created the security vulnerability during an update, the DNC says.

The Sanders campaign fired a supervisory staffer involved in the incident and has gone on the warpath Friday claiming that the DNC overreacted and is trying to aid Clinton’s campaign.

The suit claims that the loss of the voter file could “significantly disadvantage, if not cripple, a Democratic candidate’s campaign for public office.” It also argues that the agreement between the candidate and the DNC mandates that a candidate get 10 days written notice to fix any issue before the party can restrict access.
ADVERTISING

“The DNC’s unwarranted, unilateral suspension of the Campaign’s Voter Data access directly impacts one of the nation’s most important electoral races, and carries political implications on a national scale,” the suit says.

“The DNC should not be permitted to tip the scales of the Democratic presidential primary without clear justification and contractual cause. The fairness of this pivotal national election should not be compromised because of security flaws introduced by the DNC and its vendor.”

The suit asks for "immediate restoration" of the campaign's access to the voter data system, damages "presently known to exceed $75,000.00" and whatever else "the Court deems just and proper."

Sanders’s campaign manager Jeff Weaver threatened earlier Friday that the campaign would take the DNC to federal court if the national party committee didn’t lift the suspension. But the DNC did not budge, arguing that it needed to restrict access in order to conduct a full investigation.

Sanders’ team only had hours to prepare the lawsuit, shown in some typographical errors present in the court filing.

One senior Democrat told The Hill that while it’s clear the Sanders campaign committed a violation, the DNC has to be wary of not feeding into the narrative that it is aiding Clinton.

“The DNC is very susceptible and has taken a lot of incoming attacks for being in the tank for Hillary and its response has to be proportional,” he said.

“Not saying this isn’t proportional, but you have to be very careful.”

He also noted that both sides are looking to take control of the message amid the controversy.

The Sanders camp is recasting the story away from one about a Sanders staffer stealing data and emphasizing the alleged overreaction as proof that the DNC is in the tank with Clinton.

The Clinton camp had remained quiet for the majority of the day, refusing comment outside of a brief and benign statement that summarized the situation. But that changed by the later afternoon, when spokesman Brian Fallon began to take a more aggressive tack on Twitter and the campaign hosted a press call with reporters early Friday evening.

Clinton campaign manager Robby Mook called the data breach “egregious” on the press call and noted that the campaign’s voter file and information are “fundamental keys of our campaign.”

“This was not an inadvertent glimpse into our data, not a mistake,” Mook said. “They made 25 intentional and targeted searches of our data.”

He also called on the Sanders campaign to stop "politicizing" and fundraising off of the DNC breach. The Vermont senator's campaign sent out a fundraising email Friday afternoon that called on supporters to sign a petition calling on the DNC to return the data back to Sanders.

DNC, Sanders reach deal restoring access to voter data

By Elliot Smilowitz

The Democratic National Committee (DNC) and Sen. Bernie Sanders’ presidential campaign overnight Friday night reached an agreement on voter data access, after a day of acrimony between the sides.

Even in the wake of a deal, the DNC and Sanders’ team have differing stories on how it was settled.

In a statement shortly after midnight, the Sanders campaign said the DNC “capitulated and agreed to reinstate Sen. Bernie Sanders’ campaign’s access to a critically-important voter database.”

The statement said that the campaign’s filing of a lawsuit in the U.S. District Court in Washington brought about the change.

“We are extremely pleased that the DNC has reversed its outrageous decision to take Sen. Sanders’ data. The information we provided tonight is essentially the same information we already sent them by email on Thursday,” said Sanders’ campaign manager Jeff Weaver.

In a statement released at about the same time, DNC Chair Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz explained the resolution differently, saying it came after the Sanders camp “complied with the DNC’s request to provide the information that we have requested of them.”

“The Sanders campaign has agreed to fully cooperate with the continuing DNC investigation of this breach,” she added.

“The fact that data was accessed inappropriately is completely unacceptable, and the DNC expects each campaign to operate with integrity going forward with respect to the voter file.”

The Sanders campaign sued the DNC Friday evening following the suspension of his campaign from the DNC’s voter database after a security breach.

The suit claimed that the campaign is losing $600,000 in donations each day that it does not have access to the data, and adds that the “damage to the campaign’s political viability as a result of being unable to communicate with constituents and voters, is far more severe, and incapable of measurement.”

The standoff came in the backdrop of Saturday night’s Democratic presidential debate, where Sanders will face off against front-runner Hillary Clinton.

Clinton and Sanders have traded insults in the wake of the DNC’s initial action, with the Clinton team accusing Sanders’ campaign of malicious wrongdoing, and the Sanders side saying the DNC is rigging the campaign to make it easy for Clinton to win the nomination.

Is The DNC Punishing Bernie Sanders For Running Against Hillary?
December 18, 2015 By The Federalist Staff

Bernie Sanders’ campaign manager said on Friday that the Democratic National Committee (DNC) is trying to undermine his campaign in an effort to help rival candidate Hillary Clinton.

Sanders campaign manager Jeff Weaver announced the Sanders campaign would be suing the DNC if the party did not restore the Sanders campaign’s access to the party’s central voter database. The DNC locked the Sanders campaign out of the database after it was discovered that a staffer for Sanders allegedly accessed Hillary Clinton’s voter data file while the DNC-managed database was experiencing security issues.  ...

Bernie Sanders Apologizes to Hillary Clinton Over Accessing Voter Data

    By RYAN STRUYK

MANCHESTER, New Hampshire — Dec 19, 2015, 8:44 PM ET

Bernie Sanders apologized to Hillary Clinton in the third Democratic debate hosted by ABC News after his staffers accessed Clinton's voter data.

"Yes, I apologize," he said when asked whether Clinton was owed an apology. "Not only do I apologize, I want to apologize to my supporters. This is not the kind of campaign that we run. If I find anybody else involved in this, they will be fired."

“I very much appreciate that comment, Bernie,” Clinton responded. “We should move on because I don't think the American people are all that interested in this. I think they're more interested in what we have to say about all the big issues facing us.”

But Democrat Martin O’Malley wasn’t having it at the debate. “David, for crying out loud, our country has been attacked,” he said, pointing to issues that he said were more important. “Instead, we're listening to the bickering back and forth. Maybe that's normal politics in Washington.”

Sanders’ remarks come after a bug in the firewall of the Democratic Party’s voter data software allowed four Sanders staffers to access files belonging to the Clinton campaign. One Sanders staffer was fired after the incident came to light late Thursday night.

In response, top Democrats suspended Sanders’ access to the party’s massive database, including its own data, prompting the Bernie Sanders 2016 to sue the Democratic National Committee in U.S. federal district court.

Early Saturday morning, the DNC restored the Sanders team’s access to its data, but the lawsuit is still on the books and investigations are ongoing.

Clinton staff have called the actions an “egregious breach of data and ethics,” but the Sanders campaign has accused the DNC of being in cahoots with Clinton.

Michael Goodwin notes, "Reading between the lines of Bernie Sanders’ dust-up with the Democratic National Committee, it is clear that Hillary Clinton started the fight by complaining that Sanders’ socialist team had snooped on her donor data.  In other words, Clinton claims to be the victim of a vast, left-wing conspiracy!"

One thing I wonder about is how did they know the data was accessed. I'm sure political camps have hundreds of people accessing their data, so the log files must be pages and pages long. It isn't like a little alarm goes off saying beep beep, Bernie Sanders is in your servers. They way they described it, basically a database was unsecured but accessible via a larger shared program or web.

Just to trigger someone looking through the log files (I doubt they have someone sitting their monitoring it), would require a suspicion of some sort, then they would need to know when to look, then, they would need to know what to look for; how do they know what IP addresses were coming from someone on Sander's team versus one of Hillary's people?  That's just the tip of the iceberg in this.

It almost smells like a setup or trap. Did they set the bait and trick someone in Sanders' camp to access it (buddies sitting around drinking, IT Hillary guy drops the hint that there is an opening, IT Bernie guy sitting there decides to explore it). Or was the IT Bernie guy paid to access it by IT Hillary guy or did he work for them all along?

Continuing, how would IT Bernie guy know it was not authorized to access if the security was left off?  If it was on a shared db or in a shared web file, it may be implied it is shared data like the rest of the DNC data.

This doesn't smell right.
