Who threatened to 'shoot all blacks'? Answer is priceless
Busted! Suspect also warned of 'bomb' on university campus
Published: 11 hours ago

Kean University alumna Kayla-Simone McKelvey

The 100 black activists protesting racial intolerance at New Jersey’s Kean University really do have someone to fear – but the distressing shooting and bomb threats aren’t coming from racist white people.

In a surprising twist, the vicious threats came from a sneaky agent inside their own ranks.

Kayla-Simone McKelvey, a 24-year-old black activist, Kean alumna and president of the Pan-African Student Union, slipped away from a Nov. 17 rally protesting racial intolerance and anonymously threatened to “shoot every black woman and male at Kean University.”

McKelvey entered the college library and used a computer there to quickly post the threat on Twitter, according to NJ.com.

In another message, she claimed there was a bomb on campus.

And in more messages, she declared, “The cops wont save you…. you’re black,” and “Black people at kean university will die.”

When she finished making the posts, McKelvey hurried back to the rally to spread the terrible news: Violent threats were being made against black Kean students.

But authorities quickly caught onto the scheme – that is, after the Department of Homeland Security and state, county and local law-enforcement officials were notified.

The following day, the university police announced the campus would remain open.

“We are profoundly troubled by this display of hatred which does not reflect in any way the values we hold sacred on our diverse campus,” police wrote in a Facebook post.

Still, many students were so troubled by the threats that they stayed in their rooms the following day and refused to go to class, one student told WNBC-TV.

The news station reported there are now calls for Kean University President Dawood Farahi to resign from his position.

But police said there was never really any plan to harm Kean students. McKelvey is being charged with a single count of making a false public alarm. Her first court date is set for Dec. 14.

Farahi told students that McKelvey's threats were a "heinous crime" Tuesday afternoon.

"We are saddened to learn that the person allegedly responsible was an active participant in the rally that took place on on campus on Tuesday, Nov. 17, and a former student," Farahi said. "No cause – no cause – can give anybody the right to threaten others."

The university released the following statement: "As a diverse academic community, we wholeheartedly respect and support activism; however, no cause or issue gives anyone the right to threaten the safety of others. We hope this information will begin to bring a sense of relief and security to the campus community."

According to the Tower, the Kean student newspaper, McKelvey attended another protest in March 2015 and was outspoken about racist comments allegedly made by a professor at the university.

McKelvey had claimed the professor made racist remarks about Tamir Rice, a 12-year-old boy killed by a Cleveland police officer in November 2014.

Online reaction to the story was mixed, and comments included the following:

How the hell is she only getting charged with a third-degree offense??
Terroristic threats wouldn't fit here? Are you for real? If this was a white person, they be drowning in multiple charges.
Well, she is a civil rights activist after all. She was just acting up.
Don't any of these kids go to college to get an education anymore? You know, the type of education that will get them jobs?
    Something is wrong with her.
Has anybody asked her what she hoped to accomplish with this stupid act of hers?
Uh, these days, just because you have a college degree does not mean you're intelligent or rational.
Too often these are campuses with virtually no diversity of viewpoints, despite however much they may be obsessed with demographic diversity.
Clearly the movements by young blacks require sound leadership and planning. These groups need to have the most intelligent, clear-thinking members be in command if they wish to salvage what little credibility is left.
It sparked a larger and very relevant dialogue about racial inequality at Kean. You have to look beyond the initial conversation starter and appreciate the message as a whole. Think BIGGER.
She is African-American and made threats against African-Americans. Black-on-black crime alive and well.
What a surprise. The whole thing was made up, just like this movement.
So when a white employer refuses to hire her because of her racist agenda [and] problem-starting past, will she sue for discrimination? Probably.
I think this qualifies her for a talk show on MSNBC.
Will the Justice Department be getting involved to see if this qualifies as a hate crime?
