 The GOP Is Overmatched
The only thing we learned from the Planned Parenthood hearing is that these Republicans aren't serious.

By David Harsanyi
September 30, 2015

If for some reason you needed additional evidence that the Republican Party was deeply incompetent, unprepared, uncoordinated, inexcusably lazy, then try watching Cecile Richards’ appearance in front of congress yesterday.

Now, I get that these kinds of hearings are normally a waste of time, but in this instance the GOP had some good reasons to project competence. This is, after all, the issue that’s generated so much tension within their party of late. An effective showing—something resembling a smart prosecution—might have allayed a bit of the percolating discontent. Yet there they were, facing a CEO whose organization performs vivisections on humans and harvests baby brains, and the best they could do most of the time was alternate between slow-pitching Richards some hangers and ensuring her martyrdom.

Most of the committee’s Republicans followed Jason Chaffetz’s lead in aimless grandstanding—which, as always, seems to be the purpose of these show trials, anyway. Self-preservation. Others spent their time chastising Richards over finances, demanding she answer questions about “market penetration” and “unit prices.”

From the article:

"But if you can’t do a better job in these skirmishes, the ones that lay the groundwork for future battles, you’re projecting ineptness. Or, in this case, you’re proving it.

If you can’t induce the CEO of Planned Parenthood to feel even slightly uncomfortable about defending videos that find her employees talking about humans as if they were commodities, you have the wrong people asking the questions. And since it’s clear that there was zero coordination and minimal preparation (repurposing some graphs from pro-life groups is hardly work) voters have no reason to believe you their concerns matter very much. The first step to not sucking this bad is acting like you do care, even if we all know you’re just engaged in theater."

Congresspeople, in what I will admit is an over-generalization but not as much of an over-generalization as would make me not say this, are as a whole amongst the least capable, least competent people you will ever find anywhere.  I have known many, I have worked for many (admittedly some years in the past now as I desired to both leave that field and acquire better remuneration for my services)...they have few (if any) profitable skills.  They are all attitude, showmanship (in the sense of a theater of the absurd), socialization and their business is essentially extortion.  Beyond the ability to use their position to extort their rewards from those more capable and productive, they have little capability at anything.  I know I over-generalize and I cannot paint everyone with this brush - but with relatively few exceptions, this holds.  This is true of Democrats and Republicans alike. They are all in the same game and while one side plays it much more effectively and ruthlessly, by pretty much accepting what they are, there isn't otherwise a significant qualitative difference.

So that the Republicans sucked could be put on them playing a cynical game and looking bad on purpose (and they really are smarter than they appear)...I don't think so.   In truth, these Congresspeople really are as ineffective and...let's just say it...stupid as they appear.

Of course... if they really are 'controlled opposition'... this is exactly what they would want you to believe because... 'you can't fix stupid'...

And this is the answer to those who beat their chest and blubber that the conservatives have no plan, no strategy to offer as an alternative to Boehner and McConnell. Maybe, but at worst we'll match no plan with no plan and end up the same, because their leadership is obviously inept and counterproductive.

Good points.

But, of course, the GOPe is fighting the conservatives exactly because the conservatives do have a plan.  And, it's not what the GOPe wants.

We voted out most everyone with the experience and knowledge of how to deal with situations like these, remember?

And, who was that whom "we" voted out?

Ditto that. What are you talking about?

Share with me the conservatives' plan for replacing Boehner? The other House leadership posts?

No "plan" in evidence. "Will somebody please step forward?"

The plan is to hang on to their seats hoping for better times. Same as the rest of the congress-critters.

Most of the old GOP guard.  Or do you really think that the current GOP House members mostly consist of politicians with 15-20-25 years of service in Congress?

Yes, actually, that does seem to be the case.

Compared to what plan in place now? There's nothing but aimless, rudderless, capitulating leadership. The only plan is to run to Obama every time he opens his mouth and try and facilitate whatever he's cooked up today.

Really?

You are really going to argue that the Tea Party wave election of 2010 didn't kick out a good number of GOP incumbents?

How about you use Google instead of being an @$$.

Who did you think they replaced when so many incumbent GOP fell in the primaries?

Free Vulcan, thank you for doing the research Godzilla failed to do because he was obviously just blowing smoke when he said, "Most of the old GOP guard.  Or do you really think that the current GOP House members mostly consist of politicians with 15-20-25 years of service in Congress?"

If he had really known what he was talking about he would have named the individuals himself instead of hitchhiking on your efforts.

Typical Godzilla.
Members of the anti-Trump cabal: Now that Mr Trump has sewn up the nomination, I want you to know I feel your pain.

2012 - Six Republicans lost renomination: three in redistricting races and three to a non-incumbent challenger. All the seats were held by Republicans.

Arizona 6: Ben Quayle (first elected 2010) lost a redistricting race to fellow incumbent David Schweikert (first elected 2010)
Florida 3: Cliff Stearns (first elected 1988) lost to challenger Ted Yoho
