Delta State professor fatally shot; campus on lockdown as manhunt continues for 'active shooter'
Victim identified as Ethan Schmidt; colleague Shannon Lamb named as suspect

A manhunt is underway at a small Mississippi college where a professor is wanted for questioning in the fatal on-campus shooting of a fellow professor.

According to the Bolivar County Coroner's Office, the victim, identified as 39-year-old assistant history professor Ethan Schmidt, was found dead inside his office at Delta State University on Monday morning.

No students were involved in the shooting, the school said, but the campus remains on lockdown.

Authorities named Shannon Lamb, a 45-year-old social science teacher at Delta State, first as a person of interest and later as a suspect in Schmidt's shooting death. Lamb is also suspected of fatally shooting an unidentified woman in Gautier, Miss., police there said.

According to officials, Lamb phoned police at approximately 10:20 a.m. to alert them to the dead woman at a home in Gautier, which is located about 300 miles away from Delta State. About 20 minutes later, the school put their campus on lockdown amid reports of an active shooter.

“We’re working under the assumption that both events are related,” Gautier Police Det. Matthew Hoggatt told reporters. “We hope that they are not, but at this point in time, information indicates that they are linked in some way, shape or form.”

Yahoo News called a number believed to be Lamb's mobile phone. A message has not been returned.

Hoggart said the vehicle Lamb was last seen driving in Gautier, a green SUV, had been located at Delta State. Later Monday, law enforcement officials said Lamb may now be driving a different car.

Schmidt attended Emporia State University in Kansas with Yahoo News editor Everett Starling, and the two had remained friends.

Starling said Schmidt was very involved at Emporia State, including serving as student body president, and was very proud to be an ESU alumnus.

“He’s somebody that I never knew to ever have a quibble with anyone,” Starling said. “He’s one of the best people you will ever know.”

Starling added: “I’m stunned. He’s a great guy. Anyone connected to Emporia State feels the burden of Delta State's loss today. It's senseless.”

Following the shooting, school officials advised all students, faculty and staff to "stay inside and away from windows" while heavily-armed police swarmed the campus, located about 120 miles northwest of Jackson.

About 3,500 students are enrolled at the four-year public university, according to its website.

A video posted to YouTube appears to show Delta State students barricading themselves inside a classroom.

According to his Facebook page, Schmidt, who had been married for nearly 17 years and has two young sons and a daughter, was planning to attend a celebration on Tuesday marking Delta State's 90th anniversary.

That celebration has been postponed, the school said.

According to his bio on the Delta State website, Schmidt received his Ph.D. in Colonial America and Indigenous People in 2007. Prior to Delta State, Schmidt spent six years at at Texas Tech, where he was the recipient of the President's Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2011.

Before Schmidt was identified as the victim, friends of the slain professor posted heartbreaking messages on his Facebook page inquiring about this wellbeing.

"Watching CNN about events on your campus," one wrote. "Please let us know when you can!"

"Yes, please let us know if you are ok," wrote another. "Thoughts and prayers to you all at DSU."   ...

One thing I learned in my life is that no woman on the planet is worth doing anything like this guy did. If you have proof positive she's cheating on you for no good reason, dump her cold, completely disassociate, and send her the evidence. She can't be that special if she's going to act like some dog in heat.

If you are stupid enough to live with a woman before you are married, keep everything in your name with  no joint possession of anything, especially where you reside. Make sure she moves in with you and not the other way around. That way when she cheats you throw her sorry ass out in the middle of the night, possessions and all and leave her to fend for herself, even if she doesn't have a damn dime to her name.

Change the locks, change your number, move if you have to, and leave her no way to contact you. Put out a restraining order if you need to. If she ends up in jail because of her stupidity, so be it. Run and never look back, because 9 times out of 10 they'll run back to you once the magic is gone. If you take them back, they'll do it again.

Ladies need to do the same if in that situation. And if he's violent, get a gun and put one between his eyes if he tries to hurt you.

If everyone took that attitude, there'd be a great deal less of these kinds of situations  in the world.
