Marilyn Mosby, the controversial Baltimore prosecutor in the Freddie Gray case, has filed another motion seeking to block the public from receiving information about the criminal case against the six accused Baltimore police officers.
In May, her office filed a gag order seeking to block witnesses, attorneys, and police from speaking publicly about the case. That motion was denied last week for being filed in the wrong court. In a new motion filed Tuesday, prosecutors asked the court to issue a protective order barring the police officers’ attorneys from publicly sharing Gray’s autopsy and other evidence in the case.
In the motion, Mosby’s office writes: “The court must not allow the discovery in this case to further fuel a defense public relations firestorm. The evidence must be made public, but its release must be made in a court of law, not in the defense efforts to court public favor.”
“The restrictions the state seeks neither impair the defendants’ ability to prepare their defense nor expose them to surprise,” according to the motion.
In their request for a protective order, prosecutors allege that the defense attorneys have been filing motions in the case “attempting to undermine public faith in the prosecutor and the charges.”
The motion states that Mosby’s office “does not seek to limit in any way the press’s right to attend the trial or any pretrial hearings” in the case, and “seeks only to have justice carried out in the courtroom, not the newsroom.”
