Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) on Sunday called for early presidential debates between both Democrats and Republicans to discuss critical issues ahead of the 2016 primary season. In an interview on NBC’s “Meet the Press," the newly declared presidential contender said the additional debates would provide contrast to where both parties stand on jobs, income inequality, health care and Social Security. "I hope very much that we can begin with the Democratic candidate debates as early as July and have some Republicans in those debates as well,” Sanders said. A spokesman for the senator's campaign added in a statement that including Republicans "could revive interest among ordinary voters in the democratic process."

Democrats announced earlier this year that they would hold six official primary debates beginning this fall. Sanders' bid to hold additional debates could run against the Democratic National Committee and its exclusivity rule. Any candidate who decides to participate in the Democratic Party debates must agree to do so exclusively, making them ineligible to participate in any debates organized by third-party groups. Republicans are scheduled to hold their first primary debate, hosted by Fox News, in August. The cable news network will limit the number of participants to candidates finishing in the top 10 of an average of national polls, which will prove problematic for campaigns that fail to make the cut.

Why is Sanders being treated as a serious participant in any Presidential debate? He's not a Republican or a Democrat. He's an independent and thus should be treated just as the Libertarians and a number of other 3rd party groups have been treated over the years. In other words, purposefully ignored.

I note, too, the MSM gives Bernie a great deal more attention than they have ever given any 3rd party candidate. While it is true he's a sitting senator there does seem to be the usual MSM double standard at play here. After all, Bernie represents only the voters of one of the smallest, and dimmest, states in the Union. Say, could the attention be due to the fact he's a socialist instead of a free market advocate?

He's trying to win the nomination over Hillary Clinton.

I know what he's trying to do, Dexter. I also know you are completely missing my point.

One reason he gains standing, is because he has actually been elected to high office, unlike many of the 3rd party attention seekers. Harry Browne, Ralph Nader, etc.

He is running for the nomination from the democrat party, unless I misunderstood something.

I'm becoming increasingly concerned that the political center-right can't even discuss economic topics, convincingly.

The economy crashed. Democrats blame that on the GOP under Bush, and they claim they are responsible for the recovery.

I would really like one-on-one debates, between GOP and dem candidates. Forget about trying to squeeze 15 Republicans onto a stage, and give them 1.75 minutes each.

I would really like to watch Cruz respond to the question: "How do firms like Goldman Sachs generate jobs, and wellbeing for ordinary American citizens? Do they facilitate transfer of jobs to foreign locations? Do they pay taxes in Texas, and in the US? What did you wife do at GS? Do you favor breaking up large financial firms?"

Ron Paul was taken pretty seriously for a while when he was trying to win the GOP nomination. I'm really not trying to defend Bernie but I don't think he's getting disproportionate attention.

There's a year and one-half till the election.  And, we're going to get our panties wedged over every stupid statement from every 3rd tier wannabe?

I'm not playing.

I see no reason to oppose what Bernie has suggested here. We need more in-depth debates between politicians. Why would anybody not support that? Voters should better understand what candidates stand for.

Not 1-1/2 years out.

Sanders should disqualify himself by his own words.   He's just another squirrel to distract us while our country is going to hell.
