Daayiee Abdullah is believed to be the only openly gay imam in the United States. The 61-year-old Abdullah was born and raised in Detroit. He came out as gay at the age of 15 and converted to Islam at 33 while studying in China. He studied the religion in Egypt, Jordan and Syria. He now serves as the Imam and educational director of the Light of Reform Mosque in Washington, D.C. “Nowhere in the Quran does it say punish homosexuals. And historians have also never found any case of the Prophet Muhammad dealing with homosexuality,” Daayiee told Dean Obeidallah, an American Radio show host of Palestinian-Italian descent. Since the 1990s, Daayiee has been advocating for the rights of LGBT Muslims in America. “When I graduated from high school, I hoped that one day gay Americans would be able to get married. And now here I am 45 years later officiating same-sex marriages—how can I not be optimistic that the future is bright?” explained Daayiee Abdullah.

He said his optimism stems from the fact that he has been receiving growing acceptance among Muslim Americans. “The younger they are, the more tolerant and accepting they are of LGBT Muslims,” he noted, adding that “there are even older Muslims who are now supportive, including a grandmother here and there.” Asked about why some Muslim countries still punish or kill gays even if there is nowhere in the Quran where does it state punish homosexuals, he explained that “it’s based on culture, mythology, and pre-Islamic laws, with the goal being power and control over people.” Responding to critics who oppose that a homosexual should be a religious leader, Abdullah said, “Some don’t believe that homosexuals can be pious. But we can be just as good at our faith as anyone else. We are simply different from other folks, not less committed to our faith.” “Some people are uncomfortable with gays,” Abdullah acknowledged. “But your discomfort with my sexuality should not translate into me having less rights as an American.”

Question:
What is Islam's position on homosexuality?

 Summary Answer:
Islam goes beyond mere disapproval of homosexuality.  Sharia teaches that homosexuality is a vile form of fornication, punishable by death.  Beneath the surface, however, there are implied references to homosexual behavior in paradise, and it has been a part of historical Arab and Muslim culture.

 The Qur'an:
Qur'an (7:80-84) - "...For ye practice your lusts on men in preference to women: ye are indeed a people transgressing beyond bounds.... And we rained down on them a shower (of brimstone)" -  An account that is borrowed from the Biblical story of Sodom.  Muslim scholars through the centuries have interpreted the "rain of stones" on the town as meaning that homosexuals should be stoned, since no other reason is given for the people's destruction.  (The story is also repeated in suras 27 and 29).

Qur'an (7:81) - "Will ye commit abomination such as no creature ever did before you?"  This verse is part of the previous text and it establishes that homosexuality as different from (and much worse than) adultery or other sexual sin.  According to the Arabic grammar, homosexuality is called the worst sin, while references elsewhere describe other forms of non-marital sex as being "among great sins."

Qur'an (26:165-166) - "Of all the creatures in the world, will ye approach males, "And leave those whom Allah has created for you to be your mates? Nay, ye are a people transgressing"

Qur'an (4:16) -  "If two men among you are guilty of lewdness, punish them both. If they repent and amend, Leave them alone"  This is the Yusuf Ali translation.  The original Arabic does not use the word "men" and simply says "two from among you."  Yusuf Ali may have added the word "men" because the verse seems to refer to a different set than referred to in the prior verse (explicitly denoted as "your women").  In other words, since 4:15 refers to  "your women", 4:16 is presumably written to and refers to men.

Interestingly, the same rules don't apply in paradise, where martyrs for the cause of Allah enjoy an orgy of virgins and  "perpetual youth"  Qur'an (56:17) (otherwise known as "boys" Qur'an (52:24)).  Qur'an (76:19) bluntly states, "And immortal boys will circulate among them, when you see them you will count them as scattered pearls."  Technically, the mere presence of boys doesn't necessarily mean sex, however it is strongly implied from the particular emphasis on the  effeminacy, handsomeness and "freshness" of the boys.  The female virgins of paradise are also compared to pearls (56:23).

Homosexuality is not allowed in Islam. There are various verses in Quran where Allah clearly says about Homosexuality.

We also (sent) Lut: he said to his people: "Do ye commit lewdness such as no people in creation (ever) committed before you? "For ye practice your lusts on men in preference to women: ye are indeed a people transgressing beyond bounds." - Holy Quran 7:80-81

"Of all the creatures in the world will ye approach males". "And leave those whom Allah has created for you to be your mates? Nay ye are a people transgressing (all limits)!" - Holy Quran 26:165-166

The end result for not giving up homosexuality was the destruction of entire cities

When Our decree issued We turned (the cities) upside down and rained down on them brimstones hard as baked clay spread layer on layer Marked as from thy Lord: nor are they ever far from those who do wrong! - Holy Quran 11:82-83

The Quran forbids any sexual relationship other than in a marriage between a man and a woman. Many homosexual men and women claim that they are born with their sexual preferences and that they have no choice. Although this point is very much in dispute in the medical world, it has no support in the Quran. Even then, irrespective of the nature of homosexuality, this matter would not affect the laws spelled out clearly in the Quran .

He could explain it all as he's heading head first to the street from the roof of a four-story building.

Quote
“But your discomfort with my sexuality should not translate into me having less rights as an American.”
I have at least as much discomfort with your using "less" and not "fewer" in that comment, Mr. gay imam Daayiee.

Sounds like a PR tactic aimed at gays here in the US.  They are probably having a hard time answering questions and reconciling the obvious - why are we not condemning Muslims killing gays elsewhere in the world - as vigorously as we are condemning Americans for refusing to bake a wedding cake?

Yes. The all just pure propaganda by the Muslims to allow them to jump the PC hurdles the Left has setup in America.

It is actually kind of ingenious, and leverages the stupidity of America. They know the gay lobby has power in America, so they say, 'OK, we'll give you a gay Imam to play with. How about that?' Meanwhile, in the real world, the Muslims are still torturing and killing homosexuals where ever they find them.

They know, intelligently I might add, that if they throw one supposedly 'gay' Imam out of 2 billion people, to the American Leftist press, that they will report obsessively on the one guy, and then they can kill the rest of the homos in relative peace.

Americans are so stupid, and so predictable.
You cannot "COEXIST" with people who want to kill you.
If they kill their own with no conscience, there is nothing to stop them from killing you.
Rational fear and anger at vicious murderous Islamic terrorists is the same as irrational antisemitism, according to the Leftists.
