Detached From Reality: New California Immigration Policies A Disservice To All

It should probably not come as a surprise to many that the immigration policies in the state of California are a mess. However, things are about to get even worse. Not only that, these new rules and laws do not help immigrants (legal or illegal), it is not what they say they want, and it puts employers in a very precarious position when hiring immigrants.

In short, this should be a liberal’s dream!

California Unveils Massive New Immigration Policy

The Democrats in the state have engineered a feel good moment for themselves, but one without any foresight at all. For starters, the new law is going to create a new state position—the Office of New Americans within the governor’s office. They are then going to provide both legal and illegal immigrants with subsidized health care and also restrict businesses from using the E-Verify system during their employment hiring and screening processes. Here’s more:

“At a news conference in Sacramento, a group of Democratic legislators—switching back and forth between English and Spanish—recently unveiled a package of 10 bills that would, among other things: create an Office of New Americans in the governor’s office to better serve the undocumented; provide illegal immigrants with subsidized health care by extending Medi-Cal coverage to all Californians, regardless of immigration status; limit use of E-Verify (the government run database that employers use to check if prospective hires are legally eligible to work) and prevent ‘abuse’ by employers; and ban businesses from discriminating against residents based on their immigration status, citizenship, or language.

This last one is a beauty. If it extends to hiring, it flies in the face of federal law, namely the 1986 Immigration Reform and Control Act that made it a federal crime to knowingly hire an illegal immigrant. Now California wants to make it a state crime to not hire one? Employers can now pick their poison: they can violate one law or the other.”

Bills Would Cost Billions, Violate Federal Law

Interesting, isn’t it? I think it is especially important to point out the fact that California is now setting themselves above federal law. Without trying to get too deeply into an argument of state versus federal rights and laws, this is just a very silly situation to promote. Hopefully, clearer heads will step into this fray and work it out.

The health care provision of this bill is also interesting. It is estimated to cost $1.3 billion. California certainly doesn’t have the money…and there was no mention of where it would come from.

So, we have a series of bills that are really only designed to please politicians. It will be confusing and possibly have legal ramifications for honest businesses trying to do the right thing. Plus, the undocumented workers haven’t even asked for these things…all they really want is a driver’s license, a work permit, and the ability to travel across the borders to visit family (and return).

Not to mention the fact these laws don’t address the real problem of illegal immigration in the first place. They are essentially condoning the illegal activity of crossing our borders without following the law or proper procedures. All of this is working to make it more socially acceptable to be an illegal immigrant. Then again, we know Obama just doesn’t care. This is simply the next logical step after allowing murderers and gang members to remain in the country.

By the way, notice also how Obama and the left are trying to get away from using the words illegal immigrant in favor of undocumented worker? What do YOU think of all this?
