The Obama administration’s email headaches aren’t over.
Only hours after Hillary Clinton answered questions at the U.N. about her use of a personal email address while at the State Department, the Justice Department revealed that Attorney General Eric Holder has used government multiple email aliases. Shortly afterward, an NBC affiliate, News-4, reported that former Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel had used a personal email address in at least one correspondence.
Holder uses multiple accounts under the names Henry Yearwood, his mother’s maiden name combined with another family member’s name, and David Kendricks, an amalgam of two members of the Temptations, the Huffington Post reported Tuesday.
All of Holder’s accounts are official @usdoj.gov accounts and thus stored on government servers, a Justice Department spokesperson told the website. Many cabinet members do not use their names in email addresses, the spokesman said, a practice that “helps guard against security risks and prevent his inbox from being needlessly inundated.”
The spokesperson added that the people who process FOIA requests know about the aliases and provide messages from all three accounts, when appropriate, albeit with the secret addresses redacted.
In June 2013, the Associated Press reported that multiple Obama administration officials, including Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius and EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson, were using secret email accounts similar to Holder’s.
Hagel’s email issue is different.
Like Clinton’s, it deals with the servers on which messages are stored and not the names of the addresses.
Hagel allegedly used two BlackBerrys while in office, one for private emails and one for government emails.
But News-4’s report found an email from White House Chief of Staff Denis McDonough that landed at a Gmail address — cthsd24@gmail.com — and not his official Defense Department email.
A Pentagon spokesperson told News-4, “On some limited occasions an email may have been sent to or from the wrong account.”
The report did not say what percentage of Hagel’s official emails went through each account.
