You know you’re in trouble when Tom Brokaw is out for your blood.

NBC’s most revered journalist is furious that Brian Williams is still in the anchor chair after he sheepishly admitted he hadn’t traveled on a helicopter hit by enemy fire.

“Brokaw wants Williams’ head on a platter,” an NBC source said. “He is making a lot of noise at NBC that a lesser journalist or producer would have been immediately fired or suspended for a false report.”

On Wednesday, Williams, 55, acknowledged that he had repeatedly said he was aboard a chopper that had been hit by a rocket-propelled grenade during a 2003 reporting trip to Iraq, when he was actually safely traveling in a different aircraft.

Brokaw, 74, was still the “Nightly News” anchor when Williams came back from his Iraq expedition — and an insider said he knew the story Williams later spouted was bunk.

“Tom Brokaw and [former NBC News President] Steve Capus knew this was a false story for a long time and have been extremely uncomfortable with it,” the source said.

NBC News execs had counseled him to stop telling the tale.

Williams still took the anchor’s seat for his “Nightly News” broadcast Thursday evening — and was working at 30 Rock all day despite calls for his dismissal. He didn’t address the issue during the broadcast.

“He is not going to be suspended or reprimanded in any way. He has the full support of NBC News,” a network source said.

Many of Williams’ colleagues believe his claim that he simply “conflated” two versions of what happened in 2003.

“There have been meetings about it all day. They are taking it very seriously,” the NBC source said.

“But we believe that Brian’s apology on the air speaks for himself. He admitted over time he conflated the events.”

NBC brass hasn’t been talking to lower-level employees about the situation, leaving people in a panic, the insider said.

“NBC bosses don’t understand how serious this is. Nobody in a leadership position is talking to the troops. Nobody has addressed it,” the source said.

One longtime NBC employee who has worked with Williams on several occasions had a few dirty words to describe the celebrated anchor, calling him a “real pompous piece of s–t.”

“He’s an a–hole,” he fumed. “He’s not a journalist. He’s a reader.

“Oh, the fireworks that are going off inside,” he said. “It’s embarrassing. He’s the face on NBC. He’s a liar.

“Everyone knew it.”

Tom Brokaw: Brian Williams' Future 'Is Up To Brian And NBC News'
Posted: 02/06/2015 11:02 am EST

NEW YORK -- Former "NBC Nightly News" anchor Tom Brokaw pushed back Friday against reports that he wants his embattled successor, Brian Williams, to be fired for falsely claiming to have been aboard a helicopter that came under rocket-propelled grenade fire in Iraq.

"I have neither demanded nor suggested Brian be fired," Brokaw said in an email to The Huffington Post. "His future is up to Brian and NBC News executives."

The New York Post on Thursday quoted an NBC source who said Brokaw wanted Williams' "head on a platter" and had suggested a more junior employee would have been fired or suspended.

CNN's Brian Stelter said his reporting inside NBC had backed up the Post's assertion that Brokaw is "furious" over the incident.

While Brokaw may not have asked for Williams to be punished over the incident, he didn’t defend his colleague in his statement to HuffPost the way former “CBS Evening News” anchor Dan Rather did a day earlier.

Rather, who was embroiled in his own media scandal, said Thursday that Williams “is an honest, decent man, an excellent reporter and anchor -- and a brave one. I can attest that -- like his predecessor Tom Brokaw -- he is a superb pro, and a gutsy one."

If somebody blatantly lied for over ten years, in the course of employment, damaging the reputation of a company, it would be justification for immediate termination.

In the case of NBC, I'm not sure they have a good enough reputation, for this to matter one twit.

By Kristina Wong - 02/06/15 04:35 PM EST
The president of NBC News says the company is weighing the "best next steps" for "Nightly News" anchor Brian Williams as it investigates his false claims that he came under enemy fire during an Iraq visit.

"This has been a difficult few days for all of us at NBC News," Deborah Turness wrote in a memo to staff that was leaked on Twitter.

"Yesterday, Brian and I spoke to the Nightly News team. And this morning at the Editorial Exchange, we both addressed the wider group. Brian apologized once again, and specifically expressed how sorry he is for the impact this has had on all of you and on this proud organization," she continued.
"As you would expect, we have a team dedicated to gathering the facts to help us make sense of all that has transpired," Turness added. "We're working on what the best next steps are — and when we have something to communicate we will of course share it with you."

The remarks are the first from NBC News executives to go public on the scandal surrounding Williams, who was forced to recant his story that a rocket-propelled grenade hit a military helicopter he was flying in during a trip to Iraq in 2003.

Williams had told the story multiple times in recent years, but earlier this week the newspaper Stars and Stripes debunked his account. The paper interviewed troops who were flying with Williams who said that a different aircraft had been fired upon.

The veteran journalist apologized on Wednesday night's broadcast and in a post on Facebook. Veterans groups blasted Williams over the incident but stopped short of calling for him to step down.

On Friday, a report in the New York Daily News said that Richard Esposito, an investigative journalist, is leading NBC News's internal probe of the matter.

"Since joining NBC News. I've seen great strength and resilience," said Turness in her memo Friday. "We are a close-knit family and your response this week has made that even clearer.

"As a relentless news agenda marches on, thank you again for continuing to do what we do — bring the most important stories of the day to our audience."
