Three people on board a small, private jet were killed when the plane crashed into a house in Maryland's Montgomery County, MyFoxDC.com reported.

Preliminary information indicates at least three people didn't survive the Monday crash into the home in Gaithersburg, a Washington, D.C. suburb, said Pete Piringer, a Montgomery County Fire and Rescue spokesman.

Piringer said a fourth person may have been aboard.

Piringer said the jet crashed into one home around 11 a.m., setting it and two others on fire. Crews had the fire under control within an hour and were searching for anyone who may have been in the homes.

Television news footage of the scene showed one home nearly destroyed, with a car in the driveway. Witnesses told television news crews that they saw the airplane appear to struggle to maintain altitude before going into a nosedive and crashing.

An FAA spokesman said preliminary information shows the Embraer EMB-500/Phenom 100 twin-engine jet was on approach at the nearby Montgomery County Airpark. The National Transportation Safety Board is sending an investigator to the scene.

At least three people were killed when their plane crashed into a home in Gaithersburg, Maryland, and several residents of the home are unaccounted for, Montgomery County Fire Department spokesman Pete Piringer said.

The small jet crashed around 10:45 a.m. Monday in the 19000 block of Drop Forge Lane, near Snouffer School Road.

According to the FAA, the Embraer EMB-500/Phenom 100 twin-engine jet was approaching Runway 14 when it crashed. The NTSB has dispatched Go-Team to the scene.

Tracey Everett was on a nearby road when he saw the plane flying extremely low.

"You could tell he was struggling with the sticks. He was trying to pull up; he would gain a little elevation and then drop again," Everett said. "His wings were wobbling back and forth, very unsteadily."

Everett saw the pilot make a hard right and then an erratic hard left, and the plane began to barrel roll. "And that's when it appeared to have made a dive down into the neighborhood," he said.

Everett tried to follow the plane into the community. "...I doubled around, got into the block just before some of the firetrucks got here, and just realized there was nothing I could do," he said.
