(TRNS) – The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) issued new guidelines Monday to improve the care and containment of Ebola in the U.S. with enhanced monitoring over quarantining.
During a press briefing, Dr. Thomas Frieden outlined details for more intensive monitoring and daily contact that will better determine the health condition of doctors, nurses and others that have returned from West Africa and if the diagnosis of Ebola is likely to occur.
When evaluating individuals for Ebola, health professionals will also classify people based on their whereabouts and level of exposure – whether they have been to West Africa, a hospital where an Ebola patient was treated or in a household.
In addition to the help of response teams, local health departments will take responsibility in assessing and actively monitoring patients in their care.
Frieden reiterated that the only way to minimize the risk of the spread of Ebola outside of West Africa is to stop it at its source. He also stressed the progress made by the CDC and the federal government so far with better protective gear, quick Ebola response teams and contact tracing in the U.S. and abroad.
