With the 2014 midterm elections fast approaching, the organization responsible for coordinating the Democrats efforts is in debt, according to an article published Tuesday in the Wall Street Journal. The Democratic National Committee has chosen to "invest in technology" rather than pay down its debt, per the Journal.
The DNC reportedly had less than $7 million cash on hand at the end of February, as compared to $15 million in debt. Some experts say that is "unusual for the party that holds the White House to carry debt so long into the next election cycle."
Part of the issue for the DNC is also that President Obama, who has also presided over the increase in the country's debt, has set up his own organization that appears to be siphoning resources away from the DNC:
“Adding to Democratic angst is that some donors are contributing to Organizing for Action, the issue-advocacy group that emerged from President Barack Obama's campaign, instead of to the DNC. Some Democrats say OFA is diverting funds from the party at a time when it is struggling to defend its Senate majority in the fall elections.
In contrast, the Republican National Committee had $10 million on hand and no debt at the end of February.
