Schools Banning Lunches From Home To Push Socialist Agenda

Posted By Dave Jolly on Oct 21, 2013 | 309 Comments

How many of you carried lunches from home with you when you went to school?  I lived on brown bag lunches through most of my school years including high school, college and through most of my working life.  If I wanted to eat, I got up, fixed my lunch and carried it with me, as did millions of other people.  One of the reasons I carried my lunch to school is that it was a lot cheaper than buying lunch in the cafeteria.

However, thanks to the dictatorial socialist policies of Michele Obama, the days of brown bag lunches are vanishing.

First I received an email with a link to the site of a deaf mom identified only as Linda.  She posted that her son Zion is a very picky eater and would not eat the lunches provided by the school.  A month earlier, Zion’s teacher sent a note home asking Linda to send lunches to school that Zion would eat because he wasn’t eating anything at the school.  Linda gladly complied and started sending lunches to school with Zion that he would eat.

Then Linda received another note from the school informing her not to send any lunches from home unless she had a doctor’s note stating that it was necessary.  Confused about the turn of events, she tried to call the health coordinator as the note stated, but could not get an answer or a response.  Knowing that Zion would not eat the school provided lunch, she continued to pack a lunch and send it to school with her son.

Again, a note was sent home from the school with a handwritten message at the top from Zion’s teacher.  The message stated:

“Please do not send a lunch to school unless a doctor’s note is sent it with connection with this letter.”

When I read this private website post, I wasn’t sure if it was real or not.  I went searching on the internet for any other references to schools banning brown bag lunches from home and I found another occurrence.

This time it took place in Chicago at Little Village Academy, a public school on the West Side.  Principal Elsa Carmona has banned students from bringing lunches from home.  She explained saying:

“Nutrition wise, it is better for the children to eat at the school.  It’s about the nutrition and the excellent quality food that they are able to serve (in the lunchroom). It’s milk versus a Coke. But with allergies and any medical issue, of course, we would make an exception.”

When a reporter showed up at the school to investigate the policy 7th grader Fernando Dominquez stood up in the lunchroom and loudly asked his fellow classmates:

“Who thinks the lunch is not good enough?”

Numerous students raised their hands and began loudly chanting:

“We should bring our own lunch! We should bring our own lunch! We should bring our own lunch!”

Fernando turned to the reporter and said:

“Do you see the situation?”

The school district says that the decision to ban lunches from home is up the individual principals and that they generally make their decision for the nutritional benefits of their students.  But what they aren’t saying publicly is that by banning homemade lunches, it forces more students to take the school cafeteria lunches which means more money for the company that provides those lunches.

Although more students at Little Village Academy are taking school lunches, many of them are throwing all or most of the lunch into the garbage.  Erica Martinez, a parent of a student at the school said:

“Some of the kids don’t like the food they give at our school for lunch or breakfast.  So it would be a good idea if they could bring their lunch so they could at least eat something.”

The school may think they are providing a more nutritional lunch, but what good does it do if the students don’t eat it and throw most of it way?  The end result is that more students are going hungry through the rest of the school day than they were before the ban on school lunches.

Michele Obama’s school lunch program is forcing more socialistic control over school children.  Schools are taking the rights of the parents to feed and provide for their children away from them and giving more rights to the schools.  Schools are controlling what the kids can and cannot eat often against parental wishes.  Schools are monitoring the activities of students outside of school and punishing them for things that the school has no authority over and the courts are supporting the schools.

At the rate things are going, I expect more radical socialistic changes in the public schools under the Obama administration.  If too many parents protest, I wouldn’t be surprised to see the parents lose custody of their children like what has been happening in Germany with parents who want to homeschool.  It’s obvious that our current liberal leaders care nothing about constitutional rights, values or morals.  The family institution is a hindrance to them and taking more control of our children is one of their main ways to destroy the family and it starts with seemingly little things like brown bag lunches.

This is another situation where parents should all ban together and fight this policy in their schools.  What's scary is that most parents will comply and lose yet another freedom of choice.
Where is the outrage?

I am fence sitting on this one. Not a comfortable place to be.

I taught in an inner city school. Over half our kids got free school lunches and breakfast in the winter (no, that policy never made sense, but it was policy). Others could buy or brown bag it. For a lot of the free school lunch kids, it was the only hot food they had during the week, and they would polish the plate. Not wildly healthy - heavy on the fried stuff and not many fresh veg - but there was some. Usual meal was a main (lasagne, liver and bacon, shepherds pie were the three biggest favorites) veggies from frozen, an apple or orange and a small pudding. The rule, heavily enforced by both the dinner ladies and staff on duty was that if it was on your tray it went down your throat. Sounds a bit draconian, put like that, but it worked. One very confused lad kept trying to eat his cutlery. I wish I was making that up - charming kid, but really not ready for secondary school!

We jumped 75 places in the annual school rankings in the first year of that policy, and the free lunch kids consistently outperformed the brown baggers, who would bring in a sad sandwich on plastic bread and a packet of potato chips.

I don't have any test results such as better academic performance but you're missing the entire point.
It's my decision, not the school administrators, as to whether my child eats the school lunch or bags from home.
We have a weekly lunch menu posted and at times the school serves something my daughter doesn't like, just as we all have our likes and dislikes.  I would hate to be forced to eat something I didn't like and my daughter deserves the same respect.
It's not up to the school administrators to tell me what I can't or can do with my child.
Forcing kids to eat something they don't like is a form of child abuse in my book!

Exactly!  I am so freaking tired of schools thinking they can dictate to parents what to feed their kids.

It's why we always had a choice of three mains. Not just the one. So there was something for everyone.

Now - your daughter is well looked after. That is a statement of fact, not a guess - I know you well enough by now to know that can be taken to the bank. If there is something coming up that she doesn't like, fine. Brown bag it. If there is something coming up on the menu that she loves, you wouldn't force her to brown bag it. You have the option. You love your daughter and will make the effort to see she is fed healthy, well, and stuff she enjoys (within reason - kids like McDonalds .....)

The kids I am thinking about - well, think of the Wire. Those sort of neighborhoods. The thought of anyone giving crap one about them was like a foreign language to them. All the teaching staff also ate in the cafeteria. Grab your food, grab a seat and talk to the kids while they ate. It was different in the 90s. We took our obligations a little more seriously than they are now.

That is why I am on the fence.

I think part of this has to do with children having food allergies.   What one parent sends a child to school with can be very healthy for their child but deadly to a child with food allergies.  When I was in high school, my neighbor who was a year older got special permission to eat her lunch in the faculty lounge.   She was allergic to damn near everything.

Back in the 1960s & 70s when I went to school the school lunches were actually damn good. I really liked them. On the other hand my mother was an awful cook, except for a couple of dishes that nobody could screw up on.   So the school lunches really was my favorite meal of the day.   There are actually web sites devoted to sharing recipes from school lunch menus of long ago.

But look what’s changed.   Here is a current lunch menu from my son’s elementary.
WEDNESDAY
Pasta Alfredo  or Turkey Deli on Flat Bread
THURSDAY
Cheesy Bread Sticks or Chicken Caesar Salad
FRIDAY
Yogart & Corn Muffin Plate or Nachos

You have two choices each day, both bad.   And you wash this crap down with 1% milk.   My son won’t eat it. He’s hungry when he gets home, and knowing he probably threw away his lunch I feed him again.

That menu is as bad as what I saw in our local paper recently - they are pushing vegetarian flat bread rollups........ YUCK!!!

Dang, Navy - that is barely even a snack! Especially for a boy who is probably burning 20,000 calories a day just at recess!

Seriously - nachos for lunch?

Contrast that menu with my favorites from our 1960s-70s cafeteria menu.

Meatloaf & potatoes
Sloppy Joes
Chili  - always served with a big Cinnamon Roll
Turkey & Gravy over potatoes
Beef & Gravy over potaoes
Spaghetti
Wrapped Dogs and fries
Chili-Mac

And all of these came with a veggie, fruit or desert and 2% milk.

And with that every day my Mom still could not fatten me up. I can't imagine how my son can ever get out of the bottom 5% in weight class for his age.   Skinny as a rail he is.

Yep. That is the sort of menu we used to have. The rule was avoid the meatloaf - they never said what meat. We always assumed it was missing students.

It is different now. The dinner ladies were not defrosting and serving stuff from some central location - they cooked. Got annoyed if you didn't clean your plate either and were not shy of making the point even to teachers!

You drive a hard bargain. Deal breaker if you want ketchup though - this is a mustard or horseradish household.

I KNEW IT! One day, I was told I would find an American with taste!!!!!

We do different sauces. Bechemel with tarragon or cream pepper sauce mainly, if we want to be fancy. Sometimes the cheese sauce from the scalloped potatoes mixes in.
Most of the time as it comes off the griddle pan - bit of salt, bit of pepper and a splash of red wine or brandy during the cooking. Maybe a touch of butter (thank you Ina!) if it is a tougher cut.

Exactly, but I don't think it's about children eating a nutritious meal in the first place. It's simply about control. If you children don't eat Moochelle's approved arugula and jicama lunch, then you'll just have to starve, you ungrateful little  wretches!
