Obadal: Dominant Land Force Vital to US Security

Amid the rise in artificial intelligence, drones, long-range fires and other technology, conflict remains an inherently human exercise, Army Undersecretary Michael Obadal said.
“At the core of it, it takes a human, a Marine or a soldier with a rifle or an outstretched hand or aid or anything else that’s required for that mission, to interact with humans,” he said. “That, to me, will not change.”
Speaking on July 30 at the Center for Strategic and International Studies at an event on the future of U.S. land power, Obadal was joined by former Army Secretary Ryan McCarthy. The event is part of a yearlong land power study by CSIS, conducted with support from the Association of the U.S. Army.
For the U.S. to achieve persistent presence and decisive control, it must have “an incredibly dominant land force,” Obadal said. Building this dominant land force requires a combined arms force that isn’t just a single piece of equipment or weapon system.
