Massachusetts Democrats recently sponsored a Senate bill creating a “permanent” government commission “on the status of people who practice Islam,” which would communicate with the government on how legislation affects Muslims and recommend Muslims for government positions.
The Senate committee on State Administration and Regulatory Oversight reported the bill, No. 2134 “favorably” and referred it to the Joint Committee on Rules, which referred it to the committee on Senate Ways and Means. That committee consists of a majority of democrats.
The commission proposed by the bill would accomplish eight different tasks, including serving as a liaison between the Muslim American community and the government, researching “Islamophobia,” recommending Muslim Americans for positions in the government and undertaking “activities designed to enable the commonwealth to realize the full benefit of the skills, talents and cultural heritage of American Muslims.” (RELATED: Democrat Responds To Reporter’s Question About Teen Being Found Shot Dead At Husband’s Property)
“The commission shall … [e]valuate the commonwealth’s hate crime statutes and whether any amendments would better protect residents from Islamophobia and other similar forms of hatred,” the bill says.
