Mamdani officials admit NYC-owned markets won’t have features like butchers, hot food — as critics rail plan is ‘destined for failure’

Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s Economic Development Corporation admitted this week that his city-owned grocery stores “might not have all the items” you’d find in a typical supermarket.

The five stores — which are expected to cost taxpayers upwards of $70 million — will likely not include hot food counters or butchers, EDC officials revealed during a board meeting Thursday.

“It may not have all the items, but it’s going to be like a typical grocery store,” insisted Jeanny Pak, interim CEO of the EDC, the powerful city-run nonprofit tasked with boosting economic growth and development.

Interim CEO of the NYC EDC said city-owned grocery stores might not have all the items you would typically find in a grocer.

Pak also echoed Mamdani’s assertion that only certain items in the stores would be discounted.

I think I kinda like this mayor proving to the world what a mistake Socialism is once again. Especially if he tries to force New Yorkers to buy from his store.

Was watching a documentary on the NY city-run OTB company. Basically a simliar premise... it was closed in utter disaster in the 2000's.

There are two types of grocery stores in big Dem run cities.  The ones Black people go to and the ones White people use to go to.

  • I was a "conspiracy theorist". Now I'm just right.
It will be like a typical grocery store, with shelves and coolers and stuff.
...and a place to swipe your EBT card...
...and maybe Swisher Sweets, 'tato chips, and Coca-Cola.

He'll be locked up behind the counter with the meats.

It would have to be a Halal butcher, wouldn't it? They'd kill the goats right there in the store.

A co-chair of the Democratic Socialists of America’s New York City chapter — Mamdani’s political home — was pressed on those concerns during a Fox News interview last week, but brushed them off.

“If the government opened a big grocery store next to your bodega, what would you do?” host Martha MacCallum asked.

“If one publicly owned grocery store that brings prices down in the neighborhood is enough to put someone out of business — maybe they shouldn’t have been in that business in the first place,” NYC-DSA co-chair Gustavo Gordillo replied.

Well, the butcher has to massage the meat beforehand, right?

Maybe Kobe goat, but no hands needed.

Here's what 100% will happen, bookmark this:

>Gov subsidized grocery stores open at 30% lower prices
>Local grocery stores cannot compete
>They go out of business
>City store becomes the only option
>No competition
>The "food desert" they set out to fix is now worse
>Demand is high, supply is low
>Empty shelves become the norm
>City responds the only way it can: purchase limits "2 per customer"
>Rationing occurs
>A rush every day, hoarding, lines
>To control the bleeding, the city quietly shrinks the basket or lets quality slide
>Wilted produce, thinner cuts, fewer options
>Budget balloons anyway, because the subsidy never shrinks, only grows

30%?  Correction.  100% below retail.  I'd hate to be the guy in charge of the "shrinkage" dept at those stores.

Your average NYC bodega owner operates on extremely small margins and must choose from a limited number of suppliers and vendors, largely owing to government regulations and taxes.

However, putting these people out of business is not going to be an unintended consequence of Mamdani's collectivism. It is the point.
"If all men are created equal, that is final. If they are endowed with inalienable rights, that is final. If governments derive their just powers from the consent of the governed, that is final. No advance, no progress can be made beyond these propositions. If anyone wishes to deny their truth or their soundness, the only direction in which he can proceed historically is not forward, but backward toward the time when there was no equality, no rights of the individual, no rule of the people."    -Calvin Coolidge

Meanwhile, he announces these stores will not have Butchers.  Are they going vegan, or will they be stocking packaged deli items like Oscar Meyer?

"Prices set at 30% below retail prices" means he's subsidizing prices to intentionally LOSE MONEY which is taxpayer money.

Let that sink in.

If you apply this economic model to everything the state runs to attempt to destroy capitalism the ONLY conclusion is state BANKRUPTCY.

There's been a documented history of this exact thing happening in cities all around the world for centuries.

What could possibly go wrong?

Corruption?  Theft?  Kickbacks?  Extortion?  Discrimination?  A lack of inventory?  A lack of selection?  Expanding food deserts as private markets are priced out of business by unfair competitive practices?

Who is going to eat the financial losses?  NY City taxpayers?  NY State taxpayers?  American taxpayers?

One thing's for sure...his subsidized groceries are going to drive legitimate grocers right out of business!

A lot of politically connected insiders will make a lot of money off this give-away of taxpayer money, before it all collapses from its unsustainability and inherent absurdity.

Aren’t snap benefits enough? The poor already get more food than the working class. And all on the workers dime.
Mamdani is just going to create a massive corrupt underground system of buying food to sell for profit in other cities.

Didn't they just close 5 or more of these in Chicago in the last few days? It truly is the definition of insanity with these state run grocery stores that have been proven over and over to fail.

RINO wonders:
"Who is going to eat the financial losses?  NY City taxpayers?  NY State taxpayers?  American taxpayers?"

NY taxpayers - yes. Good and hard.
NY State taxpayers - in time, yes as well.
American taxpayers - not so long as Mr. Trump is in office. After that...???
