In a Monday statement, Starmer gave the announcement, explaining he would remain in office until a new prime minister is selected. The practice in the UK is for the ruling party in Parliament to put forward the next leader.
Starmer, the sixth prime minister in 10 years in the European nation, explained that his party, the center-left Labour Party, viewed the current prime minister as not being the best choice to lead into the next general election.
Despite his announcement, Starmer claimed that his tenure was marked with economic success, and that his successor, whom he said he would fully support, would be inheriting a stronger nation than he had received from his predecessor.
