CHICAGO — ICE Chicago officers arrested a violent felon and former La Raza street gang member on a federal arrest warrant May 6 after the Chicago Police Department intentionally released him into the community.
Luis Manuel Saucedo-Cardenas, 40, a criminal illegal alien from Mexico, was issued a federal criminal warrant for illegal reentry April 29. The Chicago Police Department confirmed the warrant May 1 but refused to transfer custody of Cardenas to ICE Chicago despite multiple requests. Instead, the Chicago Police Department released this criminal into the community.
“The Chicago Police Department knowingly jeopardized the public’s safety by releasing a dangerous suspect with a federal criminal arrest warrant. Politics aside, there is no excuse for sanctuary politicians to threaten the well-being of the communities they purport to serve,” said ICE Chicago Acting Field Office Director Tammy Marich.
Cardenas has a rap sheet that includes multiple arrests for assault, controlled substance violations and carjacking, as well as prison time for wire fraud. ICE previously removed Cardenas in 2022.
