How Climate Fear Took Over a Generation

What happens when children grow up believing the world is ending?
In this thought-provoking presentation to Heartland’s 16th International Conference on Climate Change, Anika Sweetland, a former climate believer describes how years of climate messaging leave her fearful, anxious, and convinced that humanity is headed toward disaster.

She argues that schools, universities, media outlets, and political institutions are teaching certainty where there should be debate and fear where there should be curiosity.

Her message is simple: science is supposed to encourage questions, not shut them down.

“Our government teaches the whole people by its example. If the government becomes the lawbreaker, it breeds contempt for law; it invites every man to become a law unto himself; it invites anarchy.” Louis D. Brandeis
