A California doctor who prosecutors say used fake Botox treatments to steal more than $45 million from taxpayers has been convicted by a federal jury after authorities uncovered what officials described as one of the most brazen Medicare fraud schemes in the country.

Violetta Mailyan, 45, of Glendale, California, was convicted on nine counts of wire fraud and three counts of obstruction tied to a sprawling healthcare fraud operation involving fraudulent Medicare billing for Botox injections.

Federal prosecutors say the scheme funded a lavish lifestyle that included luxury vacations, expensive collectibles, high-end vehicles, and even the purchase of a rare 17th-century crossbow worth $12,000.

Doctor Became Extreme Outlier in Medicare System

According to the Department of Justice, Mailyan’s operation first drew scrutiny after federal analysts discovered she had received more Medicare payments for Botox injections than any doctor in the United States.

Why should Medicare be paying for Botox at all???
