Earlier this week, the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs (HSGAC) and Judiciary Committees introduced their pieces of the reconciliation package to provide funding for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Border Patrol for the remainder of President Trump’s term. The release follows passage of a budget resolution in Congress last month laying the groundwork for reconciliation – a process that only requires a simple majority vote in the Senate for passage, avoiding the legislative filibuster.
Late last month, President Trump signed a bill into law providing appropriations for DHS after
congressional Democrats repeatedly blocked funding for over 70 days to push radical, anti-enforcement demands aimed at undermining ICE. Congressional Republican leadership reached a deal that DHS would be funded in that bill, while ICE and Border Patrol would be funded through reconciliation.
The HSGAC bill includes critical funding to further secure our borders. The bill includes:
$19.1 billion for Customs and Border Protection (CBP) personnel
$7.45 billion for ICE personnel and operations support
$3.45 billion for CBP border surveillance technologies, screening of unaccompanied alien children (UACs), and measures to counter drug trafficking
