New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani is looking to get the Big Apple on a tighter budget, and seems to see cuts to the New York Police Department (NYPD) as a way of getting the city back on track.

Mamdani's predecessor, Mayor Eric Adams, proposed at the end of his term that the city hire 5,000 more NYPD officers. However, upon entering office, Mamdani moved to cancel all orders signed by Adams following his Sept. 26, 2024, indictment. This included the proposed NYPD personnel increase.

Under Adams' plan, the NYPD was set to add 300 officers in July 2026, growing to 2,500 in July 2027 and eventually increasing to 5,000 additional officers annually in July 2028. The Adams plan allowed the NYPD to deploy approximately 40,000 officers to the streets, while Mamdani's plan caps the number closer to its current level of around 35,000.

Additionally, in the preliminary FY 2027 budget, it notes the importance of "significantly reducing current vacancies," which could include reductions in funding for the NYPD based on unfilled positions. The Gothamist, a New York-based publication, noted that Mamdani's budget proposes a $22 million decrease in the NYPD's $6.4 billion budget next year.

My  26 yr old niece lives in Brooklyn and works in Manhattan.  I fear for her safety.

I understand. I have a 28-year old niece who lives in Queens and works in Manhattan. She's a socialist (naturally: she's got a Master's degree in social work) who thinks Mamdani is great. I fear for her, too.

How long until the 'volunteer' Sharia Squads start enforcing the(ir) law?

People desperate for order will tolerate a lot. (Too much). Especially in a City that opposes the tools (and action) of self defense.

I have a couple of nieces born in Texas that live in Manhatten.  They can not imagine living anywhere else.

They think Mamdani is a bright spot for NYC.

When I wrote this in the morning I was joking: “Hey, maybe the city could simply defund all the cops, fire departments, and sanitation”. But, really, you just had to know that Mamdani would want to get rid of cops
 
The NYPD is already down at least 16% from their budget for officers, which is also well below what they really need. I’m betting Zohran’s security detail will not see cuts.

The NYPD is one tough outfit to go against, perhaps with only Chicago cops being tighter-knit.

If they bail, watch for those with money to hire private security in droves.  And they will be former NYPD.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani — one of the most heavily protected politicians in the U.S. — rumored to have a personal NYPD detail of up to 60 officers between him and his wife, costing taxpayers $10–12 million per year, plus tons of overtime and vehicles.

Just giving the people what they voted for.

In the last mayoral and in the last gubernatorial election, there was a candidate in each race that made fighting crime a top priority.  That candidate was soundly defeated in both.  The electorate does not want safer streets.  Mamdani is the best mayor they have ever had.

Yeah my cousin who writes musicals lives in NYC, but born in Iowa.  He absolutely loves NYC.

The law of unintended consequences is certainly going to come into play here. Less police will mean an increased exodus of taxpayers from the city. Which will make the budget problem even worse. Naturally , this will be blamed on all of the white supremacists who refuse to support all of the radical left social programs.

Bet the budget that gets cut is the police budget.
Overall, it will amount to a redistribution of funds, and no reduction in expenditures..
