LOS ANGELES - The intensifying struggle for control over the strategic Panama Canal has now triggered an escalation in global maritime tensions.
The United States Federal Maritime Commission (FMC) said it is closely monitoring a sharp surge in the detention of Panama flagged vessels by Chinese authorities.
Beijing’s aggressive actions are believed to be a direct retaliation for a ruling by Panama’s Supreme Court at the end of January, which unilaterally annulled the legal framework supporting CK Hutchison’s historic 1997 concession.
The ruling stripped the Hong Kong based company of its operating rights over the Balboa and Cristobal terminals, which sit on the Pacific and Atlantic sides of the Panama Canal, a crucial route that supports five percent of global maritime trade.
