Given Republicans’ concerns about the filibuster, Trump is not taking any chances about Americans suffering from yet another election riddled with fraud.

Yesterday, two things happened. First, Sen. Susan Collins (R(ish)-Maine) agreed to support the SAVE Act, which would require identification and proof of citizenship to vote in federal elections and which brings the Senate to 50 “yes” votes. Second, recognizing that even with the votes to win, Republicans might not override a filibuster, Trump announced that he would make elections honest through executive action, if necessary.

The SAVE Act is not complicated. As Rep. Marlin Stutzman (R-Indiana) explained in a poster, it does not require people to bring mountains of documentation with them when they register to vote, nor will married women need to “change their birth certificates.” Instead,

This simplicity does not comfort Democrats, who have long claimed that millions of people will instantly be disenfranchised if they are required to provide identification. My personal favorite is probably a 2021 Kamala Harris interview that is gaining new traction. In it, she insists that the benighted people in rural communities will be unable to find a photocopier and undoubtedly lack access to printers, rendering them unable to comply with Voter ID requirements:
