Schumer, Jeffries: White House ICE offer ‘insufficient’

Democratic leaders who are demanding sweeping reforms to the Trump administration‘s immigration enforcement tactics said Monday that a counterproposal from the White House was “incomplete and insufficient.”
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) said in a joint statement that Republicans shared with them an outline of their proposal, “which included neither details nor legislative text.”
“The initial GOP response is both incomplete and insufficient in terms of addressing the concerns Americans have about ICE’s lawless conduct. Democrats await additional detail and text,” they wrote, as time winds down to fund the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
Details of the proposal were not made public.
Democrats have laid out a list of 10 reforms they want to see within DHS, including new restrictions on Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers and Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents, as tensions rise over tactics used by the administration to implement President Trump‘s deportation agenda. Their criticism was exacerbated last month after two U.S. citizens were shot and killed in Minnesota by federal agents.
