A sprawling fraud scandal puts Minnesota’s Somali community in the spotlight

Massive fraud blamed on dozens of Minnesota residents of Somali descent has jumped to national attention, with House Republicans launching an investigation into how pervasive corruption in the state’s social-services system was allowed to fester under Democratic Gov. Tim Walz’s administration.
 
The probe by the GOP-led House Oversight Committee deepens scrutiny of the scandal in Minnesota, where federal prosecutors say the fraud exceeded $1 billion and that dozens of people bilked taxpayers by setting up scam social-services companies. Close to 60 defendants have been convicted, and federal prosecutors last week charged the 78th person in a prong of the cases that authorities called “the largest Covid-19 fraud scheme in the country.”

Years after some of the Minnesota fraud cases came to light, the issue has stirred up the governor’s race and drawn in President Trump. On social media, he called the state “a hub of fraudulent money laundering activity” and said he would immediately end temporary protected status for Somali immigrants in Minnesota.

“Somali gangs are terrorizing the people of that great State, and BILLIONS of Dollars are missing,” he wrote. “Send them back to where they came from. It’s OVER!”

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Minnesota is home to the nation’s largest Somali community — a rapidly expanding Muslim population that has become a flashpoint in national debates over integration, welfare fraud and how the group is reshaping the state’s historically Scandinavian, Christian cultural landscape.

That scrutiny intensified this week after President Donald Trump blasted Somali Minnesotans as welfare abusers who have been raiding state coffers for years.

"I hear they ripped off — Somalians ripped off that state for billions of dollars, billions every year. … They contribute nothing," Trump said, amid news that some Somalis were involved in bilking that state out of hundreds of millions of dollars in various fraud schemes.

"I don’t want them in our country, I’ll be honest with you. Somebody says, ‘Oh, that's not politically correct.’ I don’t care. I don’t want them in our country. Their country’s no good for a reason. Their country stinks and we don’t want them in our country."

Trump and members of his administration have also accused the population of committing immigration fraud in order to bring friends and relatives to the U.S. and again claimed Rep. Ilhan Omar married her brother — a charge she has repeatedly denied.

For years, accusations of crime and gang activity — and the fact that a small cohort of Somali Minnesotans traveled overseas to join al-Shabaab — have cast a long shadow over the community’s efforts to assimilate.

Ilhan Omar needs to be FULLY investigated again and this 'Little Mogadishu' needs to be FULLY investigated.  Are they here legally for one and are they adhering to local laws and zoning laws?  Putting up mosques?  Permitting?

In a post on X, Dr. Oz claimed more than $1 billion had been stolen through a massive Medicaid fraud scheme carried out by “bad actors” within Minnesota’s Somali community, alleging some of the funds “may have even made its way to the Somalian terrorist group (al-Shabab).”

A Somali candidate for King County Council in Washington state, who previously threatened to blow up a school bus full of children and was later arrested for allegedly assaulting parents at a school drop-off, received campaign donations from daycare businesses in Minnesota. The donations to King County Council candidate Ubax Gardheere, who is of Somali descent, are drawing attention amid a viral investigative report by independent journalist Nick Shirley, who alleges widespread fraud involving Somali-run daycare facilities in Minnesota.

Shirley reported that many of the daycares receiving millions in taxpayer funds appear to have no students enrolled—this after visiting them and finding empty storefronts. In one example, Shirley visited the Quality Learning Center in Minneapolis, a facility reportedly receiving $4 million in public funding. He found a misspelled sign reading “Quality Learing Center,” a largely empty parking lot, and no indication that children were present.
 
These daycare centers are government funded under a Minnesota program called the Child Care Assistance Program. Republican lawmakers have since called for Minnesota Governor Tim Walz to be “held accountable,” citing the growing scrutiny over the scale of alleged fraud linked to childcare funding in the state.
