Will the Iranian regime finally be overturned?

We might actually be witnessing the toppling of the mullahs.
Susan Quinn | January 1, 2026

Iran is not a stranger to protests by its people, but the current economic crisis has kicked off the biggest protests the nation has seen since 2022. And, these protests appear to be different; it looks like the mullahs might finally have pushed the people over the edge toward regime change and freedom. The conditions are ripe for major disruptions:

The continuing protests add more pressure on the government struggling to contain widespread discontent. Iran is facing a weak rial, extremely high inflation and international sanctions. It is also running out of water, and power shortages are widespread and frequent.

The short June war with Israel also exposed the government’s weakness and its inability to protect itself from infiltration by Israeli spies. It devastated Iran’s nuclear weapons and ballistic missiles programs and shattered its air defenses.

The financial aspect of the chaos in Iran can’t be overstated. In addition to depleting their savings, people are struggling with rising costs. Since the war with Israel in June, the rial has lost 60% of its value:

According to the state statistics center, the inflation rate in December rose to 42.2% from the same period last year and is 1.8% higher than in November. Food prices rose 72% and health and medical items were up 50% from December last year, according to the statistics center. Many critics see the rate as a sign of approaching hyperinflation.

Reports in official Iranian media that the government plans to increase taxes in the Iranian new year that begins March 21 have caused more concern.

No.  I see this headline every few years and it never happens.

This time, the US does not have an Administration in place that openly supports the Iranian regime.

If a political party does not have its foundation in the determination to advance a cause that is right and that is moral, then it is not a political party; it is merely a conspiracy to seize power.     -Dwight Eisenhower-

"The [U.S.] Constitution is a limitation on the government, not on private individuals ... it does not prescribe the conduct of private individuals, only the conduct of the government ... it is not a charter for government power, but a charter of the citizen's protection against the government."     -Ayn Rand-
