ew York Gov. Kathy Hochul is under fire for an order to light 16 state landmarks, including One World Trade Center, in green Friday night to celebrate Muslim American Heritage Month.
The first-ever such order was issued to honor “the values, faith and traditions of our Muslim American communities,” according to a press release from the governor’s office. But critics note it strikes a tone-deaf note, considering that One World Trade Center stands at the site of the Twin Towers destroyed by Islamic extremists on September 11, 2001.
Councilwoman Vicki Paladino, R-Queens, noted the irony:

While I was proud to be sworn in as our city’s first Muslim mayor yesterday, Muslims have been part of New York for centuries. We have built small businesses, raised our families, pursued every profession, enriched our culture and cuisine, and been a part of what makes our city what it is today. I am grateful for Governor Hochul’s leadership in recognizing these many contributions and ensuring that every January, Muslim New Yorkers can see ourselves reflected and recognized in a city and state that is also our home.
Multiple other Muslim New York public officials and religious leaders also praised the action in the governor’s press release.
