'Highway Sentinel' sweep nabs 101 truckers as feds target California license policy
Story by Maria Hernandez • 14h
Federal agents arrested 101 commercial truck drivers across California this week, concluding a major enforcement sweep aimed at undocumented individuals holding commercial driver’s licenses (CDLs).
The initiative, dubbed Operation Highway Sentinel, was led by Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) branches in San Francisco and Los Angeles. Officials described the operation as a direct intervention into public safety risks they claim are exacerbated by California state policies.
According to ICE Deputy Director Madison D. Sheahan, the arrests were necessary to address dangers posed by drivers who, despite obtaining state-issued CDLs, lack legal status in the U.S. Sheahan explicitly criticized California Governor Gavin Newsom’s administration, linking the issuance of these licenses to a series of fatal accidents involving commercial vehicles in California, Florida, and Oregon throughout 2025.
