Explosion at Pennsylvania senior home prompts mass casualty response
Emergency crews from multiple jurisdictions respond to Bristol, Pennsylvania facility where people were trapped inside.

An explosion and partial building collapse at a senior living facility in Bristol, Pennsylvania, triggered a large-scale emergency response Tuesday afternoon, with officials reporting multiple people trapped inside.

Officials said emergency crews responded to reports of an explosion on Tower Road in Bristol at about 2:15 p.m.

WPVI reported the explosion occurred at the Silver Lake Nursing Home, with multiple reports of people trapped inside.

Fire and EMS crews from multiple jurisdictions were seen at the scene, with dozens of first responders assisting in rescue efforts.

PECO said crews responded to reports of a gas odor shortly after 2 p.m., at the Silver Lake Nursing Home.

While on site, PECO added, an explosion occurred at the facility. Immediately after the explosion, crews shut off the natural gas and electric service to the facility to ensure the safety of the first responders and local residents.

Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro asked the community to join him and his wife Lori in praying for the Bristol community after learning about the explosion.

Not to second guess things, but if they suspected a gas leak, why not shut the gas off immediately, get the residents somewhere warm and vent the building?

Waiting until after an explosion is like closing the barn door after the horses get out.


I must note, restarting everything after shutting it off can be a real pain, and that accumulated gas pockets can explode whether the gas is on or not. Depending on level of care required, evac can be very difficult.

BRISTOL TWP., Pa. (WPVI) -- Two people are dead after an apparent gas explosion collapsed part of a nursing home in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, on Tuesday afternoon, leaving an unknown number of people trapped in the rubble.

Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro confirmed the two deaths at a news conference Tuesday evening. Rescuers believe five people remain unaccounted for, Shapiro said, but he cautioned that the numbers remain preliminary.

Action News has also learned that at least 21 people were sent to various hospitals. The extent of their injuries remain unclear.

It happened around 2:15 p.m. at the Bristol Health and Rehab Center, also known as Silver Lake Nursing Home, on the 900 block of Tower Road in Bristol Township.

PECO confirms crews responded around 2 p.m. after getting reports of a gas odor.

The explosion occurred while crews were on the scene.

Video from the Action Cam showed flames erupting from the building. Debris could be seen scattered around the area.

Sad to say if this was a SNF, the chances of those 21 surviving are not great. I hope to be wrong, of course.
