Why so many New Yorkers were swayed by the lies of socialism and Zohran Mamdani
Isaac Schorr

On Tuesday, New Yorkers — by a slight majority, but a majority nonetheless — endorsed Zohran Mamdani and the proud, unrepentant form of socialism he champions as the answer to, as least as he presents it, all of their woes.

“We will prove that there is no problem too large for government to solve, and no concern too small for it to care about,” Mamdani declared during his victory speech, an inversion of Ronald Reagan’s famous truism.

At least some of the Big Apple’s lurch to the far left is attributable to the 34-year-old’s undeniable political talent.

But there are greater, or — to be blunt — more sinister forces at work.

Most insidious of all are two intertwined lies: that Americans today have it worse than their forebearers and that their wealthy peers bear the blame for their plight.

  • Ah, the air is so much fresher here...
I guess some of us hoped that being the age of the internet and social media with unlimited access to information people wouldn't fall for the old song and dance. It's like we're back in the 1930's with a chicken in every pot. How do people get so starry eyed still with a 100 years of miserable failure and worse for collectivism?

People are like the Bible says, dogs returning to their own vomit. What can men do against such reckless stupidity?

In a free and healthy society: education is a bulwark against ignorance, and religious faith, a shield against greed and envy.

When the schools are run by Marxist-Leninist-Maoist revolutionaries, and traditional faith is either absent or captive to a foreign ideology: the result is the death of both freedom and social cohesion through shared values.
"If all men are created equal, that is final. If they are endowed with inalienable rights, that is final. If governments derive their just powers from the consent of the governed, that is final. No advance, no progress can be made beyond these propositions. If anyone wishes to deny their truth or their soundness, the only direction in which he can proceed historically is not forward, but backward toward the time when there was no equality, no rights of the individual, no rule of the people."    -Calvin Coolidge

True, but when you have the internet and refuse to educate yourself, that's squarely in the realm of cult religious belief.

Fair enough. Too many people have become comfortable in their isolation/comfort zones, and refuse to explore ideas and thoughts that might discomfit them.

And yes, that is indicative of cult behavior.

This is New York City

A very blue area in a blue state with a diverse population

And young people came out in droves to vote for him. The idea of “free” is very appealing to them, especially with costs rising.

Mamdani is isolated to New York City for now. The model that the Democrats are going to use in the next two election cycles is not going to be the Mamdani model. Doubtful he and his type will have much appeal beyond the hard left democratic base.

It’ll be the Spanberger model.
