Lawmakers budge, ushering in government shutdown's potential 'end of the beginning'
We're seeing movement for the first time since the shutdown began in October

"Now this is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end. But it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning." – Winston Churchill

It’s not an agreement. Just a plan.

But the political ice which has frozen lawmakers and closed the government for 37 days is softening.

Just barely.

"There seems to be some indication of a thaw," said Sen. Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn.

Let’s face it:

Both Republican and Democratic lawmakers are skittish about the shutdown. They’re agonizing about aviation. There’s increasing worry among bipartisan lawmakers about federal workers not getting paid and the cessation of emergency food benefits known as SNAP. Everyone wants a deal. However, no one knows where to find one.

Any agreement will be about the math. But lawmakers are locked in this shutdown box and can’t find the combination to escape.

Republicans caving in 5 . . . 4 . . . 3 . . . 2 . . .
If a political party does not have its foundation in the determination to advance a cause that is right and that is moral, then it is not a political party; it is merely a conspiracy to seize power.     -Dwight Eisenhower-

Republicans caving in 5 . . . 4 . . . 3 . . . 2 . . .

The populace is poorly educated and largely dependent on government transfer payments and handouts.
The news media are 95+% Democrat partisans.
Republicans were going to be blamed no matter what they did or said (as silenced or twisted by the media).
The shutdown was entirely the fault of the Democrats, who have no scruples about lying, ever.

What did you honestly think was going to happen when one party cares about efficiency, incentives and costs, and the other only cares about power, money and control?

What always happens. The GOP reaches across the aisle, agrees to Democrat terms and then gets bitch-slapped, insulted and blamed all over again.

Republicans snatching defeat out of the jaws of victory.

In other words, never do the right thing because Democrats might get mad?

No! Not at all. But the "right thing" is likely to get Republicans killed at the ballot box in 2026 when millions of people have had their Thanksgiving (and maybe, Christmas) flights cancelled. Or God forbid: when a plane crashes because our national ATC were understaffed.

Listen to me: do not underestimate the evil of the Democrat party, as presently constituted.

Democrats will be to blame, but Republicans will feel the wrath. We can scream about the unfairness of it all, but that won't change perceptions...

Unless Republicans are willing to stand up in front of microphones and tell people that Democrats are evil bastards risking citizens' lives and fortunes so that they can give billions of taxpayer dollars to illegal aliens to buy their loyalty. And their votes. And also that the news media are lying SOB's who care more about their rich friends in powerful places than the health and welfare of the American people.

I haven't seen those balls yet, but just maybe...

Caving to those sons of bitches and dumping 1.3 trillion dollars into NGOs and illegals isn't going to win the GOP any votes, either.

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

 :amen: Exactly correct!

I agree with that statement. That's exactly what it would do. 90% of Republicans likely agree. But that's not how it will be portrayed. Reality and perception are way too far apart right now.

So the larger question is: can anything be done about it? How? By whom? That is what I am trying to get to through this discussion.

That, and if it works once, they will continue to use the tactic.

It cannot be allowed to work. Let 'em turn blue in the face and fall on the floor. Maybe when the tantrum is over, they will pull their heads out of the warm dark places they have shoved them and get with the program.
