Schiff: Shutdown Hurting GOP Electorally Since They’re in Charge, Dems Should ‘Hold Firm’

Ian Hanchett 5 Nov 2025

During CNN’s Election Night coverage on Tuesday, Sen. Adam Schiff (D-CA) said that the government shutdown is harming Republicans electorally and we saw that in the results of the elections that took place that day, “and it makes sense. They’re controlling everything. They control the White House, the House, and the Senate. They’ve been unwilling to negotiate with Democrats. And so, I think we need to hold firm” on the shutdown and their demands.

Schiff said, “The president, on his social media tonight, acknowledged that the shutdown is part of the reason Republicans are losing, and it makes sense. They’re controlling everything. They control the White House, the House, and the Senate. They’ve been unwilling to negotiate with Democrats. And so, I think we need to hold firm, demand changes that make health care affordable for people.”

He continued, “I want to see the government reopen, but I also want to see people be able to afford their insurance. And it shouldn’t be too much to ask, in the wealthiest country in the world, that we be able to do both, that we have both a functioning government, but also that we have accessible health care for people.”

  • I was a "conspiracy theorist". Now I'm just right.
You can't emphasize this enough:

It takes sixty votes to pass the CR and reopen the government.

While there may be a majority of Republicans, there are not enough to pass the Bill.

All but one Republican has voted to pass the CR (what? 14 times?), and three Democrats.

It is the rest of the Democrats who have been keeping the shutdown going.

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

The shut down is good.  For me it is quite entertaining.  Who wins is not a factor.

The longer the shutdown lasts, the better.  The Republicans' starting position here is to seek a continuing resolution on the Democrats' 2022 budget.  Can't get much weaker than that.  If the Democrats cave, they get what they already had.  But it's more likely that Republicans will cave and give Democrats even more.  So the only victory I see here is to keep the government shut down until 2030.  Maybe then, we can start paying down some debt.
If a political party does not have its foundation in the determination to advance a cause that is right and that is moral, then it is not a political party; it is merely a conspiracy to seize power.     -Dwight Eisenhower-
