Shipping is already moving into a rapidly brightening spotlight on Capitol Hill and a Maritime Action Plan (MAP), currently being prepared by a group of Federal agencies, is set to be submitted to President Donald Trump in early November.

Commercial shipbuilding will be an important component of this plan. Against the backdrop of the upcoming MAP, the US Senate Commerce Committee, chaired by Senator Ted Cruz (Republican- Texas), sub-Committee on Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation’s Subcommittee on Coast Guard, Maritime, and Fisheries held a two-hour hearing on 28 October, with a focus on US Shipbuilding.

The hearing, titled “Sea Change: Reviving Commercial Shipbuilding” convened by Senator Dan Sullivan (Republican- Alaska) comes at a time that the “Ships For America” legislation, introduced into the Senate in late April, is under consideration by this Subcommittee.

Hearing testimony was presented by Matt Paxton, President, Shipbuilders Council of America,  Jeff Vogel, Vice President - Legal, TOTE Services, part of Saltchuk Corporation,  the well-known online influencer Dr. Sal Mercogliano, Professor, Campbell University), and Tuuli Snow, Talent Acquisition & Engagement Manager, at Seattle shipbuilder Snow & Company, Inc. Each of the presenters gave a brief speech, which was then followed by questions from members of the Senate sub-Committee.

It was a sad day when the shipyard in my town closed.  It had such a rich history and tradition of being at the forefront of maritime innovations such as aircraft carriers, nuclear-power cruisers, and refrigerated liquid natural gas tankers.

It's glory days were when it was owned by Bethlehem Steel.  It's sad days were when it was owned by General Dynamics.
