A federal judge in Chicago on Thursday temporarily blocked the Trump administration from ordering the federalization and deployment of the National Guard of the United States within Illinois.

U.S. District Judge April Perry ruled orally from the bench, and she said her order will last 14 days. A written ruling is expected to follow, and the Trump administration will surely appeal.

Illinois and Chicago sued the Trump administration Monday over the deployment, setting the stage for Thursday’s hearing.

Earlier this week, Perry cautioned the Trump administration to “strongly consider taking a pause on this until Thursday, so that we are not in a position where we are doing a full-fledged hearing with whatever has happened.”

CHICAGO (AP)–U.S. District Judge April Perry on Thursday blocked the deployment of National Guard troops in the Chicago area for at least two weeks, finding no substantial evidence that a “danger of rebellion” is brewing in Illinois during Trump’s immigration crackdown.

It’s a victory for Democratic officials who lead the state and city and have traded insults with President Donald Trump about his drive to put troops on the ground in major urban areas.

“The court confirmed what we all know: There is no credible evidence of a rebellion in the state of Illinois. And no place for the National Guard in the streets of American cities like Chicago,” Gov. JB Pritzker said.

Deputize National Guard members as Federal Protective Service officers.  Problem solved.  Thereby, they are civilian Federal officers.

Lawyering is parsing the words on pieces of paper.  "National Guard" and "Federal Protective Service" are different proper nouns.

Chicago might need some more National Park Service Police officers, too.

A court is not the final authority.  The Constitution is.  And that document clearly gives the Executive authority in this area.

We need a Supreme Court who enforces this.
