Federal Judge Orders Chicago Cops to Stop Carrying This Particular Handgun

Quote:
A federal judge in Illinois has ordered the Chicago Police Department to stop using the Sig Sauer P320 handgun after the local police union complained that the department was taking too long in phasing out its use.

U.S. District Judge Rebecca Pallmeyer granted Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 7's request to get involved in an order earlier this week, stating that CPD officers who have access to a handgun that “meets appropriate standards should be required immediately to use that alternative weapon” in place of the P320.

Well this is the pistol that has a nasty habit of firing by itself or when dropped, and has been an issue for a while.  But it's ridiculous that a federal court is involving itself in an internal police matter over whether to keep using it or not.

If the She-Judge can ban the use of this handgun does that mean she could ban others?

This particular model may be a safety/liability issue, according to sources which claim to have been able to get them to fire with extremely little pressure on the trigger and at other inappropriate times.

If the wrong person gets shot, all Hell could break loose, and the City would end up being liable.

If the Department was unwilling to pull the model in question, the Judge may be providing all the incentive needed to prevent issues in the future. It is an equipment issue, involving the police, not a broader based 2nd Amendment case.

I've been following this whole issue with Sig since the beginning...all I will say is that I've carried a P320 compact since they came out and I've had zero issues.  And I didn't send mine back in for the free trigger fix either.  It's been bounced around pressed down on etc etc and never one misfire or AD.

The incidents I've seen where an investigation is complete always comes back to operator error.

And keep in mind too the whole "The P320 is unsafe" was started by a bunch of Glock fanboi's that were butt hurt that the 19X didn't get picked as the military's new sidearm.

I don't really have a dog in this hunt, either way.
I don't own a Glock, and my Sig is one of my favorite handguns, but it's a P226.

My carry gun is an A-75 Astra in .45 ACP. I wish I'd bought two at the price I bought that one.

I don’t have a dog in the fight, but I will say that I too have followed this and almost all of the people with YouTube gun channels that jumped on the 320 after the last highly publicized supposed ND have retracted their negative comments.

Is it possible that there have been some instances of non contact, by the operator, where the gun fired in certain circumstances? yes, but I have seen reports that such occurrences are not limited to Sig or the 320.

One of the early incidents where a police officer shot himself in the leg when his P 320 fired on its own was found to be using a holster made for another Sig...that he'd modified to fit the P320 and when he holstered the weapon the trigger hit a piece of the holster.

The most recent one with the Air Force it turns out that one of the Airman shot the other one.

You could probably drop any semi auto handgun from the crazy angles they dropped the Sig from and make them go off.  Especially when there's no manual safeties on them.

Yup he's my go to for guns.  But I'm gonna agree to disagree with him on this one.
