Abrego Garcia’s Deportation Case Sparks Outrage
The case of Kilmar Abrego Garcia faces increased scrutiny as Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has proposed deporting the Salvadoran national to Eswatini, following earlier suggestions of Costa Rica, Uganda, and El Salvador as potential destinations.
This frequently changing list of countries has sparked criticism from advocates who argue that none ensure Abrego Garcia’s safety. As he contests a criminal indictment in Tennessee and seeks to reopen a 2019 asylum case, the case underscores broader concerns about due process and the treatment of asylum seekers.
A Department of Homeland Security (DHS) official questioned the validity of Abrego Garcia’s claims, stating, “That claim of fear is hard to take seriously, especially given that you have claimed through your attorneys that you fear persecution or torture in at least 22 different countries. Nonetheless, we hereby notify you that your new country of removal is Eswatini, Africa.”
