The Telegraph reports:
 
New rules could ban gas cremation ovens and introduce eco-friendly coffins

Labour is plotting to make UK crematoria greener by banning gas cremation ovens and forcing grieving families to choose eco-friendly wicker or bamboo coffins.


New rules for crematoria, drawn up by the UK environment department, are set to be upgraded to meet both new pollution standards and the UK’s commitment to reach the target of net zero by 2050 championed by Energy Secretary, Ed Miliband.

Under the plan, the Government will seek to cut emissions of greenhouse gases and other pollutants, including mercury from dental fillings, and airborne toxins from burning coffin glue and embalming fluid.

Draft rules also suggest crematoria burn bodies one after another, with no gap to retain heat and save on gas – a tough target for an industry that relies almost entirely on gas-fired ovens.

What the heck, just dig a hole and shove the corpse into it. Skip the coffin, skip the embalming, skip the clothing, even - after all, those buttons won't compost.

Dunno. If your body is to be viewed or lie in state you need the embalming, and if going to cremation, it is not uncommon to keep the body in a rented coffin for the service (which will be refurbished for the next use), and the final box (for shipping purposes) is of very heavy cardboard before cremation. I do not know if the box is burned with the body.

My thoughts also, I thought when i came to cremation the body was placed in a cardboard box/coffin. Why would anyone pay all that money for a casket just have it end up the urn, and then there are all the xtra ashes that aren’t part of your loved one.

Bury 'em in the garden.  Stiffs make great fertilizer ... rich in iron and calcium.

Dump 'em in the ocean to feed the fishes.

Leave 'em in the desert for the buzzards.

Co-generation: combination crematorium / electricity generation station.

Old cemeteries out this way, some have a sink spot (older graves)... Buried in pine boxes that collapse over time. That is how I want to go, a good ole pine box and a good indention in the ground 100 years later (facing East to meet my savior).

Yes.  Embalming needed if the body is to be viewed in a public service.  Not if you go straight to the oven.

I am relating what we did when Mrs. Joe passed.
Too much family to not have a viewing, and a casket to wheel in for the service.

I'm donating my body to science. They cremate when all is done. Any ashes left go in a memorial garden. I really don't think my relatives want me sitting on their mantle. And I don't care any way. It ain't me. Just my earthly shell. I just hope my remains can assist some future doctor to do something good. That would make me very, very happy.

A year or so ago because my mom’s health was failing I finally went to the local Forest Lawn to see about residency for her and my dad when she passes. 😱 If you think real estate is expensive when it comes to houses you will get a reality check at the cemetery. If I hadn’t made my mind up on roast and toast before, I became a believer.

The rules are based on consultations by the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (Defra), with the industry dating back several years. It will be the first update since 2012.
