Caine: US Faces ‘Multiple, Simultaneous’ Challenges

Mon, 09/15/2025 - 08:01
From the war in Ukraine to the crisis in the Middle East, the U.S. military faces an increasingly dangerous security environment, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff said.

“Tom Clancy could not have come up with the multiple, simultaneous issues that we’re facing today in our security environment,” Air Force Gen. Dan Caine said, referring to the bestselling author.

In addition to Ukraine and the Middle East, there have been several coups in Africa, North Korea is still seeking nuclear capability, and criminal organizations are moving drugs into the homeland, Caine said during the recent National Guard Association of the United States General Conference and Exhibition in Milwaukee.

“Adversaries are increasingly aligned and becoming friends, and, of course, we have our pacing threat on the horizon, and that's China,” Caine said. “Our global risk score really has never been higher.”

The unity of government which constitutes you one people is also now dear to you. But as it is easy to foresee that, from different causes and from different quarters, much pains will be taken, many artifices employed to weaken in your minds the conviction of this truth.  George Washington - Farewell Address
