Trump Wins Court Ruling on Migrant Protections
Story by Michael Davis • 18h
The 9th Circuit Court has allowed the Trump administration’s decision to end deportation protections for approximately 60,000 migrants from Honduras, Nicaragua, and Nepal. The ruling overturns a previous order by a Biden-appointed judge that had preserved Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for the groups. Immigration advocates warned the decision puts vulnerable populations at risk of forced removal to dangerous conditions in their home countries.
The Trump administration called the ruling a major win. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin said TPS was meant to be temporary and criticized prior administrations for indefinite extensions.
McLaughlin stated, “Temporary Protected Status was always meant to be just that: Temporary.” She added, “TPS was never meant to be a de facto asylum system, yet that is how previous administrations have used it for decades while allowing hundreds of thousands of foreigners into the country without proper vetting.”
McLaughlin said, “This unanimous decision will help restore integrity to our immigration system to keep our homeland and its people safe.”
