This Design Choice Made U.S. Carriers Nearly Unsinkable

Early American carriers had wooden decks, no armor, and a fatal flaw: one torpedo could be the end. But after losing ships like Wasp, Yorktown, and Hornet, the Navy radically changed course. From armored decks and barricades to angled runways and nuclear power, this is how U.S. carriers became the most survivable and sophisticated, warships afloat.

In that day, double hulls were a very advanced feature.  Calling it "unsinkable" was an advertising slogan White Star Lines had to eat, and people are laughing at it to this day....
